Leaving Mérida by the Milagros Aqueduct is one of the most rewarding starts on the route. You pass the Roman reservoir of Proserpina, cross El Carrascalejo and Aljucén and enter the Cornalvo Natural Park on lonely tracks through Mediterranean scrub. You finish in Valdesalor, at the gates of Cáceres. Demanding for its distance rather than its climbs: ration your water.
