Llanes
Information
Located in the eastern part of Asturias, Llanes is one of the most visited towns in the region. With a deep-rooted fishing tradition, it has experienced a significant tourism boom in recent years. Under the slogan "Llanes de cine" (Cinematic Llanes), following the filming of movies such as The Orphanage, the town has positioned itself as a key location for national cinema, offering its vast natural and cultural heritage as a backdrop.
A little history
The first remains testifying to human presence in this territory date back to the Palaeolithic period. During the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period, the town experienced development primarily linked to the primary sector, specifically fishing, livestock, and agriculture.
What to see in Llanes
Historic Centre
The historic centre of Llanes is a declared Historic-Artistic Site due to its immense heritage value. Retaining a strong medieval character, its main attractions include the Basilica of Santa María, the 13th-century keep and defensive walls, and the Gastañaga Palace.

Basilica of Santa María
This medieval basilica combines Romanesque and Gothic styles. Its dimensions are strikingly large and its appearance is very solid, with the Romanesque influence visually dominating the Gothic elements.

Paseo de San Pedro
This is a spectacular cliffside promenade that serves as a natural viewpoint. It is a truly impressive space, widely considered one of the finest balconies overlooking the Cantabrian Sea.
El Sablón Beach
This is the urban beach of Llanes. Nestled between two rocky outcrops, this cove features the distinctive funnel shape characteristic of many beaches along the Cantabrian coast.
Memory Cubes
This large-scale art installation was created by the renowned Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola (the artist behind the Oma Forest). Ibarrola applied his signature colorful style to the concrete blocks of the harbor's breakwater, transforming the functional space into a vibrant cultural landmark.
