From Lezama to Bilbao - Viajes Camino de Santiago

Today’s stage, with its start in Lezama, is very short, which is fantastic, as it gives us the opportunity to stop longer in Bilbao. Some pilgrims who already know Bilbao, choose to continue to Portugalete. Our recommendation is that you stay in Bilbao and enjoy the atmosphere of this city.

This stage begins by leaving Lezama to follow the sidewalk of the N-637 road to Zamudio, where we will have to leave the asphalt for a moment to head towards Bilbao. When we reach the church of San Martín, we must turn left to continue in the direction of an industrial estate. Today’s landscape is a clear indicator that we are on the outskirts of a big city.

Our way continues on asphalt tracks until we start the ascent to the Avril mountain. After overcoming the Avril mountain, perfectly signposted, we will begin the descent to Bilbao, during which we will enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the city.

After crossing a bridge over the ring road, we will find the first houses of Bilbao. We will continue walking to the end of the stage in the old town.

To consider

The climb to Mount Avril can be a bit long but it is not particularly hard as we gain 300 meters of altitude in just over 3 kilometers. The descent takes us directly to the Bilbao Old Town.
