Information about Llanes
Located in the eastern part of Asturias, Llanes is one of the most visited villages in the region. With a deep-rooted fishing tradition, in recent years it has experienced a strong boom associated with tourism. Under the slogan “Llanes de cine”, after the filming of the movie “El Orfanato”, Llanes tries to position itself in the world of national cinema, offering its great natural and cultural heritage as scenery.
A little history
The first remains that testify the human presence in this territory date back to the Palaeolithic. During the Middle and Modern Ages, this village will live a development mainly associated to the activities of the primary sector, such as fishing, livestock and agriculture.
What to see and do in Llanes
Historical center
The historic centre of Llanes has been declared a Historic-Artistic Site due to its great heritage value. With a marked medieval character, its main attractions include the basilica of Santa María, the 13th century tower and walls and the Gastañaga palace.
Basilica of Santa Maria
It is a medieval basilica that combines Romanesque and Gothic styles. Its dimensions are considerably large and it has a very massive appearance, so that the Romanesque element dominates over the Gothic.
Paseo de San Pedro
It is a spectacular walk on the cliff, which serves as a viewpoint. It is a truly impressive space that can be considered one of the best balconies of the Bay of Biscay.
Beach of El Sablón
It is the beach of the town centre of Llanes. Wedged between two rocky outcrops, this cove has the particular funnel shape of many of the beaches of the Cantabrian Sea.
Memory Cubes
It is a work of art, which can be considered an artistic installation, created by the famous Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola (author of the paintings of the Oma Forest). Ibarrola leaves the essence of his paintings on the cubes that make up the breakwater of the port, filling the space with colour and cultural charge.
