During this stage we will leave the company of the Cantabrian Sea as we leave Deba to enter the Basque mountains and reach Markina. A hard but rewarding stage in terms of landscape, nature and culture.
This stage is part of the Northern Way. Would you like to walk it with your accommodation already booked? These organised trips include it: Northern Way from San Sebastián to Bilbao and Northern Way from Irún to Bilbao.
Today you say goodbye to the sea in Deba and head into the Basque interior. After climbing to the Calvario hermitage, a path leads you to Olatz, the gateway to Biscay, through some of the purest, most authentic rural scenery in the Basque Country. You cross Mount Arno along forest paths to Markina, home of Basque pelota. At the end, choose the newer route, which is in better condition.
