- day 1
Arrival at San Sebastián
The Camino del Norte begins! You leave Irún crossing the Santiago bridge over the Bidasoa and the rich marshes of Txingudi. You climb to the sanctuary of Guadalupe, with superb views over the estuary, and skirt Mount Jaizkibel among oaks and chestnuts down to Pasajes, where you cross by boat. At the end, one of the most beautiful cities on the Cantabrian coast: San Sebastián.

Stage 1. San Sebastián - Zarautz (22.2 km)
You leave San Sebastián heading west, between beaches and hills. You climb Mount Igueldo in zigzags and follow the old Orio road, with the Cantabrian Sea always in the background, amid farmhouses and meadows. You pass through the seafaring town of Orio and, after some magnificent views of Getaria and its “mouse”, arrive in Zarautz, with its very long beach.

Stage 2. Zarautz - Deba (21.8 km)
You can leave Zarautz along the seafront promenade, with a strategic stop in Getaria, birthplace of Balenciaga and of the navigator Elcano. The route continues towards Zumaia, with its flysch coastline, and climbs towards the Santa Klara farmhouse along local roads and dirt tracks, some quite steep, to Deba, back by the sea.

Stage 3. Deba - Markina (24 km)
Today you say goodbye to the sea in Deba and head into the Basque interior. After climbing to the Calvario hermitage, a path leads you to Olatz, the gateway to Biscay, through some of the purest, most authentic rural scenery in the Basque Country. You cross Mount Arno along forest paths to Markina, home of Basque pelota. At the end, choose the newer route, which is in better condition.

Stage 4. Markina - Gernika-Lumo (24.6 km)
A stage steeped in history. From Markina you pass through Bolibar, ancestral home of the forebears of the liberator Simón Bolívar, and the monastery of Zenarruza, a jewel of Biscayan Gothic. After climbing the slope of Mount Oiz, a long descent takes you to Munitibar and finally to Gernika, the town Picasso immortalised in his most famous painting.

Stage 5. Gernika-Lumo - Lezama (20.8 km)
You leave Gernika skirting the Urdaibai reserve, with spectacular natural scenery. The day strings together climbs — Morga, Aretxabalagana — among hermitages, tracks and lovely forest paths, always well signposted. After Larrabezu, there's no way to get lost on the road to Lezama, where the stage ends at the gates of the Bilbao area.

Stage 6. Lezama - Bilbao (31.4 km)
The last stage towards Bilbao. From Lezama the path descends through the valley, between green areas and the occasional urban stretch, gradually entering the big city. The reward is its Casco Viejo (Old Town): the Cathedral of Santiago, the Siete Calles, and, very close by, the imposing Guggenheim Museum. A capital that blends seafaring tradition with cutting-edge architecture.
