Vila Franca de Xira is a municipal entity composed of several parishes, among which stands out the homonymous, which is the municipal capital. The main nucleus of the municipality is made up of a well-defined urban area, bathed by the waters of the Tagus River. In its limits is the Marechal Carmona bridge. The entire territory of the municipality is part of the metropolitan area of Lisbon.

This territory refers the first data of foundation and origin to the archaeological sites around Lisbon. From the studies carried out in the area, we know that its first settlements date back to prehistoric times, with the presence of Lusitanian tribes. Throughout its history, it has been a territory occupied by Romans and Arabs, until its conquest in the Middle Ages by the Christian kingdoms of the north of the peninsula.

It has been located in its current building, designed by the architect Alcino Soutinho, since 2007. The museum is currently seeking to broaden its foundational horizons and expand its outreach to other contemporary artistic styles.
