The “Light up the Camino” initiative returns to Galicia to celebrate Christmas by illuminating around fifty emblematic buildings along the Camino de Santiago. This initiative, a continuation of the Xacobeo program from the holy years 2021-2022, aims to enhance the beauty and significance of the Jacobean routes during Christmas. Would you like to know where you can enjoy it? In the following lines, we will tell you where you can admire how Galicia lights up the Camino de Santiago with the Xacobeo at Christmas.
We start with the province of A Coruña, where the Chapel of Santa María Magdalena in Milladoiro (Ames) stands out, through which the Portuguese Way passes. At the Finisterre lighthouse, you can also see this illumination, where the Finisterre and Muxía Way ends. The Church of Santiago in Betanzos, the Post Office Building in A Coruña, and the Jofre Theater in Ferrol take the spotlight on the English Way. And as it could not be otherwise, in Santiago de Compostela itself, the tower of the Berenguela of the Cathedral is illuminated.
In the province of Lugo, monuments located on the Primitive Way are illuminated, such as the Cathedral of Lugo and the Cathedral of Mondoñedo. And as it could not be otherwise, the French Way will have, among others, two major protagonists: the Church of Santa María de la Real de O Cebreiro and the Church of San Nicolás in Portomarín.
Let’s move on to the province of Ourense, where several buildings along the Via de la Plata are illuminated. Notably, the beautiful Cathedral of Ourense and the two-thousand-year-old Roman baths of As Burgas. Additionally, in A Gudiña, where the Sanabrian Way passes through, the Church of San Martiño is illuminated.
Finally, in the province of Pontevedra, emblematic places like the Cathedral of Tui are illuminated. In Vigo, you can enjoy the lights at the Museum of the Sea, right on the Portuguese Way along the Coast.
Look for the yellow arrows on Christmas nights
There are many more illuminated monuments and buildings that we can find in Galicia this Christmas. In addition, this initiative has two objectives: to attract visitors and pilgrims and to enhance the experience of the Camino de Santiago at Christmas. In addition to the traditional Christmas lights, we have the opportunity to enjoy the Camino de Santiago with the Xacobeo at Christmas. Join us in pilgrimaging at night and follow the path of the illuminated yellow arrows in the most Jacobean Galicia.
