Galicia lights up the Camino de Santiago with the Xacobeo at Christmas
29 December, 2023
Enjoy how Galicia "lights up the Way" with the Xacobeo at Christmas, an initiative that illuminates around thirty monuments and emblematic buildings along the different routes of the Camino de Santiago to enhance their beauty and significance during the Christmas festivities and attract visitors.
The initiative "Light Up the Way" returns to Galicia to celebrate Christmas by illuminating around fifty emblematic buildings along the Camino de Santiago. This initiative, a continuation of the Xacobeo program from the holy years 2021-2022, aims to enhance the beauty and significance of the Jacobean Routes during Christmas. Would you like to know where to enjoy it? In the following lines, we will tell you where you can admire at night how Galicia lights up the Camino de Santiago with the Xacobeo at Christmas.
We begin in the province of A Coruña, where the Chapel of Santa María Magdalena in Milladoiro (Ames) stands out, through which the Portuguese Way passes. At the lighthouse of Finisterre, we can also see this illumination, where the Way of Finisterre and Muxía ends. The Church of Santiago in Betanzos, the Post Office Building in A Coruña, and the Jofre Theatre in Ferrol are the main attractions on the English Way. And as it could not be otherwise, the tower of the Berenguela of the Cathedral is illuminated in Santiago de Compostela itself.

In the province of Lugo, monuments located on the Primitive Way are illuminated, such as the Cathedral of Lugo and the Cathedral of Mondoñedo. And as it could not be otherwise, the French Way will have, among others, two major highlights: the Church of Santa María la Real de O Cebreiro and the Church of San Nicolás in Portomarín.
We are going to the province of Ourense, where several buildings are illuminated along the Silver Way. Notable is the beautiful Cathedral of Ourense and the two-thousand-year-old Roman baths of As Burgas. Furthermore, in A Gudiña, where the Sanabrés Way passes, the Church of San Martín is illuminated.
Finally, in the province of Pontevedra, emblematic places such as the Cathedral of Tui are illuminated, as well as the Museum of the Sea in Vigo, right on the Portuguese Coastal Way.
Look for the yellow arrows on Christmas nights
There are many more illuminated monuments and buildings that we can find in Galicia this Christmas. This initiative, in addition to illuminating these historic paths, has two objectives: to attract visitors and pilgrims and enhance the experience of the Camino de Santiago at Christmas. Besides the traditional Christmas lights, at the end of this year we have the opportunity to enjoy the Camino de Santiago with the Xacobeo at Christmas. Join us to pilgrimage at night and follow the path of the illuminated yellow arrows in the most Jacobean Galicia.
