A little history
There are documents that prove the existence of this village around the year 968, although there had already been earlier settlements in the area. Its development and history are closely linked to the French Way, of great importance for Redecilla del Camino. There are different remains of Romanesque art being cited as one of the most important villages of the Camino, in the first Pilgrim’s Diary, Codex Calixtinus, written in the thirteenth century by the French cleric and pilgrim Aymeric Picaud.
What to see and do in Redecilla del Camino
The church of the Virgen de la Calle
This interesting church is a small heritage trace in Redecilla del Camino. It was rebuilt in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and retains a set of altarpieces and rococo furniture. It has a magnificent Romanesque baptismal font from the 12th century in which its sculptural decoration stands out. A historical contribution to the visit to this beautiful village.
The mountains of Ayago
To enjoy the natural heritage of this area it is very interesting to visit the Montes de Ayago, a subsystem belonging to the north face of the Sierra de la Demanda and separated from it by the high course of the river Tirón. They form the mountainous part and the south of the region called the Riojilla Burgalesa and they are the separation between Burgos and the Rioja. Several rivers and towns pass through here, so there is no shortage of things to see and do.
