This first stage of the Route of Padre Sarmiento can be started from the city of Pontevedra, crossing the bridge of “O Burgo” towards Sanxenxo, passing through Poio, or directly from that town. During this stage, we will have the estuary as a protagonist until we reach Combarro, the village of the thousand hórreos and cruceiros. From Combarro, the route continues through coastal paths, coves and beautiful beaches, until it reaches Sanxenxo.
Sanxenxo is the capital par excellence of Galician tourism. This area of the Galician coast enjoys many hours of sunshine, which has earned it the nickname of “Galifornia”. Sanxenxo is one of the most visited places in Galicia in summer.
We can start this first stage leaving from the city of Pontevedra, or starting directly from Poio. If we start our journey from Pontevedra, we must cross the bridge of “O Burgo” in the direction of Sanxenxo to enter the municipality of Poio. After crossing the town centre of Poio, we will continue along the coastline, alternating coves of beautiful beaches with rocky outcrops. On our way, we will have the opportunity to visit the beaches of Lourido and Cabeceira, and pass by the port of Campelo.
Subsequently, the coastline cuts inland on its arrival at the Seca promenade, to open up again towards the Pinela beach, presenting us with the iconic village of Combarro.
Here we can take a break to visit the beautiful village of Combarro.
Once we have resumed our march, we continue along the coastline of the province of Pontevedra, passing through Chancelas, O Covelo, Raxó and A Granxa, until we reach Sanxenxo. It is a landscape dominated by continuous inlets, beaches and ledges, where we walk with the presence of Tambo Island on the horizon.

It is frequent that the pilgrims who start the route of Padre Sarmiento, come from a previous section of the Portuguese Way and on arrival in Pontevedra, decide to continue along this variant until they reach Sanxenxo. It is highly recommended to make a considerable stop in Combarro, to get to know the village well.
