Ajangiz is a small municipality located in the Busturialdea region of Bizkaia, just a few kilometres from Gernika-Lumo. It is a quiet stop on the Northern Way, surrounded by the typical green landscape of the Basque Country. Its rural setting and proximity to the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve make it an ideal place to rest before continuing the route.

The municipality retains a rural character with scattered farmhouses and offers pilgrims an atmosphere of peace and Basque authenticity.

What to see in Ajangiz

Church of San Andrés

The parish church of San Andrés is the most notable building in Ajangiz. Gothic in style, it dates from the 16th century and features a bell tower that dominates the municipal landscape. Inside, you can admire baroque altarpieces of remarkable craftsmanship.

Urdaibai Natural Environment

Ajangiz lies within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, declared by UNESCO in 1984. From the municipality, you can take hiking trails through the surroundings, enjoying native forests, meadows, and views of the Oka estuary.

Basque Farmhouses

The municipality preserves numerous traditional Basque farmhouses (baserriak) scattered across its territory, some dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Walking among them offers a glimpse of rural Basque architecture in its most authentic form.

Proximity to Gernika

Just 3 km from Gernika-Lumo, pilgrims can take the opportunity to visit the Tree of Gernika, the Assembly House, and the Peace Museum, symbols of Basque history and culture.
