Information
During this stage we recreate the real “Traslatio”. of the Apostle Santiago, starting from Vilanova de Arousa and following the course of the river Ulla upstream until we reach Padrón.
Our stage today is full of epic places in the history of Galicia, such as the imposing Torres de Catoira, a place where the Vikings supposedly arrived.
The first milestone of today’s day will be Vilagarcía de Arousa, 9 kilometers from Vilanova to which we will arrive alternating roads and coastal paths and once in Vilagarcía, we start by land the route of the famous and mythical route of the Traslatio to Padrón. The path runs alongside the river Ulla, upstream. We leave the centre of Vilagarcía in the direction of Carril, to cross along our way the places of Bamio, Catoira, Vilarello and Pontecesures.
Undoubtedly, the most impressive point along the route will be Catoira with its imposing towers. Once we arrive to Pontecesures, after crossing the bridge to Padrón, the spiritual variant of the Way will be finished. From here, you can continue to Santiago de Compostela Santiago de Compostela by the conventional route of the Portuguese Way.
Padrón is famous, among other things, for its peppers and for having been the place where the Apostle Santiago’ s boat landed when it touched land. For this last reason, it will be obligatory to visit the famous Pedrón in the church of Santiago, which according to legend was used to moor the boat of the Apostle, in order to fully complete the spiritual variant.
To consider
There is a specific certificate that certifies the realization of the spiritual variant: the Pedrony. It is granted in the city council of Padrón, so we must leave early to walk from Vilanova de Arousa if we want to pick it up.
