The town of Tui is reflected in the calm waters of the Miño River, a picturesque border village chosen by thousands of pilgrims to begin their adventure on the Portuguese Way to Santiago de Compostela — and now you can experience it too, together with your dog!

In these last 100 km of the Portuguese Way from Tui with your dog, divided into 6 stages, you’ll walk through small rural villages surrounded by vineyards and farmland, while your furry companion enjoys the natural surroundings. Halfway through, the Atlantic Ocean will become your guide, leading you along the route and offering spectacular views of the Vigo and Pontevedra estuaries. Further along, the path will take you across charming medieval bridges, chapels, and picturesque spa towns. The Portuguese Way from Tui is also a feast for the senses. Along the route, you’ll savor delicious Galician cuisine, such as the famous Arcade oysters, mussels paired with Albariño wine, and the eternal question: are Padrón peppers spicy or not?

So that both you and your dog can enjoy the Way without worries, we offer dog-friendly accommodations at every stage, where you’ll both rest comfortably. We also provide luggage transport so all you have to do is walk and enjoy the scenery. You’ll also receive your pilgrim credential (and a “perregrino” one for your pet), so you can stamp it at each stage and get your certificates at the end of the journey.

Stages of the Portuguese Way from Tui with a Dog in 6 Stages

If you like multicultural places, you’ve just come to the perfect place. Tui is a border town with Portugal, from which it is only separated by the river Miño. In fact, Tui forms a Eurocity with Valença do Minho. Moreover, it is an amalgam of people because here pilgrims who, like you, begin the adventure, come together with the pilgrims who come walking from Portugal. Perfect for meeting people, listening, sharing experiences and preparing for the adventure you are about to start. Enjoy your Portuguese Way from Tui!

This is a stage of exuberant colours and vegetation, as several kilometres run through itineraries of the Natura 2000 Network of the Gándaras de Budiño. The walk is pleasant and gentle, so enjoy the surroundings and your first day as a pilgrim.

What better way to end the day than with a pleasant stroll through the historic centre of this welcoming town. It is a place totally closed to traffic and people of all ages and nationalities pass through it. It also has numerous shops and cafes located in the surrounding area. The perfect plan to enjoy a relaxing afternoon is to sit on one of the terraces of the town hall square and enjoy some delicious portions with a good Albariño wine.

Today you continue your journey and the reward of the effort will be to take the Ría de Vigo as a companion. Lately in Spain there is a tradition of putting benches with the title “The most beautiful bench in the world” in places with privileged views. Well, there should be a bench at every point that you are going to walk along during the journey. I think we don’t need to tell you more. The best views of the coast of southern Galicia will rise up before you today.

To round off this glorious day, where you’ll arrive ecstatic with so much natural beauty, what better way to finish off than by tucking into some good oysters in Arcade. It is not for nothing that this place is considered the capital of oysters. I assure you that you won’t have tasted anything like it. Of course, don’t forget to accompany your meal with a nice glass of Albariño, the best white wine in the area.

You will leave Arcade behind and start the stage crossing one of the most important bridges in Galicia in terms of history, Ponte Sampaio. It is a colossal stone bridge that spans the river Verdugo and where, during the War of Independence, a battle was fought that led to the withdrawal of French troops in Galicia. After crossing the bridge you will wander among villages, pazos, hórreos and cruceiros until you reach the Brea Vella da Canicouva, an evocative path of large slabs along which the Roman road XIX used to pass.

Pontevedra is for many people one of the most beautiful cities in Galicia, and no wonder. A stroll through its cobbled streets and squares will be enough to realize the special charm it hides. After Santiago de Compostela, Pontevedra is the place on the Portuguese Route from Tui with the largest number of heritage elements. You can visit, among other things, the Ruins of Santo Domingo in the Provincial Museum of Pontevedra, the Royal Basilica of Santa María la Mayor, and the symbol of the city: the church of La Peregrina.

After crossing the river Lérez the Camino leaves Pontevedra and will take you to the Marismas de Alba observatory, a large wetland of 80 hectares that is home to hundreds of plant species and 123 species of birds. The route runs along roads where there are many crossroads and level crossings, so you should take extreme caution. Once you get to Briallos, we recommend you take a detour of half a kilometre to visit the Cascadas del Barosa, a natural site of extraordinary beauty, with a beautiful sixty-metre waterfall and fourteen mills arranged along the waterfalls.

At the end of your stage, Caldas de Reis, the water is still the protagonist as it is one of the most important thermal villages in Galicia, and we present the perfect plan to enjoy a pleasant afternoon: After a short walk through the botanical garden, sit on one of its terraces and enjoy the tranquility listening to the murmur of the river.

After saying goodbye to the thermal village of Caldas, you will enter the valley of Bermaña following the route through its forests of centenary trees, oak groves, cornfields and cruceiros. After a gentle ascent you will reach Santa Mariña de Carracedo, a village with a church, a rectory and a granary. The road continues towards Padrón passing through deep forests with water mills and leaving behind small villages until Pontecesures. After crossing the bridge of Roman origin a few kilometres away you will find the end of the stage, Padrón,

Today’s plan is about literature. On this day we introduce you to Rosalía de Castro, one of the most illustrious Galician women in history. In his House-Museum in Padrón, you will be able to know everything about his life and work.

Besides, Padrón is a famous town for more reasons. Related to pilgrimages, it is a mythical place because legend has it that it was there that the boat carrying the remains of the apostle St. James landed. You can visit the famous Pedrón that was used to moor the boat in the church of Santiago in the village. And how could it be otherwise, no one can leave without tasting its famous peppers.

Last day of the pilgrim experience! As we always say the ideal is to get up early to make the most of the day in Santiago de Compostela. Today’s stage will pass super fast between nerves and excitement of the imminent arrival. The jewel of this stage is the beautiful collegiate church of Iria Flavia, which was the first cathedral in Galicia and in whose cemetery, under an olive tree, you will find the humble tomb of the famous writer Camilo José Cela. The route continues through the towns of Teo and Ames until you reach the Plaza del Obradoiro. Undoubtedly the most emotional moment of all your French Way from Tui.

You are in Santiago! Feel happy and proud to have completed your Portuguese Way from Tui. Now we just need to pick up the Compostela certificate and enjoy an incredible day getting to know the Galician capital.

You and your dog will comfortably share the same room for sleeping without any issues.

Yes, but you'll need to bring your own food and your dog's own bowl. You'll also need to bring a water bowl.

Some accommodations, despite allowing pets, have an internal policy to ensure that dogs are not left unattended in rooms to prevent any disturbance to other guests, such as barking. Therefore, we recommend that you always check with your assigned accommodation designated accommodation regarding their specific policies and arrangements for pets.

Typically, each booking includes accommodation for one dog. If you plan to travel with additional pets under the same reservation, please let us in advance.

No, only the mandatory insurance and the vaccination record.

We recommend that you always keep your dog on a leash on roads, in urban areas or in towns where there are likely to be loose animals. In Galicia it is allowed by law that dogs are allowed to run loose on rural roads. Therefore, you can let it enjoy whenever you are in rural areas, forests, fields etc.

If during the Camino de Santiago you have any incident with your pet and it makes it impossible to continue walking, we have a transfer service from any point of the Camino. In addition to the documentation provided upon reservation, you'll have access to a helpline while on the road for assistance. Don't hesitate to reach out to us!

The optimal choice is to either travel by car to the beginning of the route or to park it in Santiago de Compostela. We offer a pet transfer service to any location along the Camino de Santiago. Feel free to reach out to us for assistance!

Just like the rest of the pilgrims, it's necessary to walk the last 100 km to reach Santiago. You'll need to remember to collect at least 2 stamps per day and then go to the Pilgrim's Office to collect your Compostela.
