2026's 500,000th pilgrim: the record Compostela goes to Mexico

04 October, 2026

On October 4, 2026, Santiago Cathedral awarded the year's 500,000th Compostela to a Mexican pilgrim who walked from Sarria with her family. It is the second time half a million has been surpassed, and this year two weeks earlier than in 2025.

On Sunday, October 4, 2026, Santiago Cathedral awarded the year's 500,000th Compostela. It is the second time in history that the Camino de Santiago has surpassed half a million pilgrims in a single year, and the first time it has happened this early: in 2025 the figure wasn't reached until October 19. According to the Pilgrim's Office, by October 5 some 500,590 Compostelas had already been issued, 8% more than at the same point in 2025.

The protagonist: a Mexican pilgrim who walked with her family

The record-breaking Compostela went to Guadalupe Idalia Goicoechea Salinas, a Mexican pilgrim who walked the Camino from Sarria together with her husband, Enrique, and her son, Luis. "It has been a wonderful experience; I'm very moved," she said as she received it.

It was presented in person by the Archbishop of Santiago, Francisco José Prieto, before the Pilgrim's Mass in the Cathedral, together with the dean, Manuel Jesús Formoso, and the canon, Víctor Suárez. It is no coincidence that this year's record has a Mexican accent: Mexico is the leading Spanish-speaking country in number of pilgrims after Spain, with more than 12,000 in 2025.

An increasingly international Camino

Half a million is not just a number. Behind it lies an increasingly global Camino: around 60% of 2026's pilgrims are foreigners and they arrive from more than 180 countries. Between January and September, the United States (41,494) and Italy (39,587) top the list, followed by Germany (20,570). If you want to know more about the nationalities, we cover it in where the pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago come from.

The calendar is changing too. September 2026 closed with 91,132 Compostelas, compared to 81,533 in the same month of 2025: more and more pilgrims are choosing spring and autumn, away from the summer heat and the crowds.

The 2025 precedent: a father, a son, and a promise

The first half-million in history arrived last year. The 500,000th pilgrim of 2025 was Jairo Forero Chaves, a 70-year-old Colombian, who reached Santiago on October 19 with his son Nicolás after walking the Portuguese Way from Baiona, in memory of his wife, Nora Patricia. They received the Compostela the following day, at a ceremony with the President of the Xunta and the Archbishop. 2025 closed with more than 530,000 pilgrims, the record that is now about to fall; you'll find all the figures in the Camino de Santiago 2025 statistics.

Heading toward the Jacobean Holy Year 2027

With almost three months still to go, 2026 is on track for a new record, and everything points to it being the prelude to an even busier Jacobean Holy Year 2027. Behind every Compostela there is a story, like Guadalupe's and her family's, or Jairo's and Nicolás's. If you want the next one to be yours, work out the price of your Camino here.
