Travel Itinerary

Santiago de Compostela, kilometer zero of the Jacobean routes, becomes the starting point of your Way to Finisterre.

No pilgrim leaves Santiago without passing through the Plaza del Obradoiro, attending the pilgrim’s mass and visiting its imposing Cathedral. It is customary to embrace the Apostle, see the Botafumeiro and contemplate the spectacular Pórtico de la Gloria. But without a doubt, Santiago is much more than its Cathedral; a stroll through its squares is enough to realize that it is a really lively city. Live music concerts, performances for children, parks, monuments, charming viewpoints, markets and a thousand other things that will make you fall in love with this fairytale city.

You will start your first stage of the Camino a Finisterre by bike from the Obradoiro square. First of all you must go to the agreed meeting point to pick up the bike in our partner shop (we will tell you the morning opening hours). Once collected, head to the Plaza del Obradoiro to start the route. Leaving the Cathedral behind you, you will see a street that goes down just in front of the Hostal de los Reyes Católicos, to the right of the Plaza del Obradoiro. This is where your Path begins. You should know that you won’t find cairns yet, but you will find yellow arrows painted on the ground.

Going down Rúa das Hortas, you will pass a crossroads with traffic lights and enter Rúa Poza de Bar, which is followed by Rúa de San Lourenzo. At the end of it, you will find a milestone indicating the mileage to Finisterre (89.586 km). At the gates of the South University Campus, in the Carballeira de San Lourenzo, you will go to the bridge over the river Sarela.

After leaving the city, the route runs through meadows and pine and eucalyptus forests, until it reaches one of the most beautiful villages of the stage, Ponte Maceira. This small town of just over 60 inhabitants, can boast of belonging to the network of the Most Beautiful Villages of Spain. It enjoys an idyllic setting as it is located on the course of the river Tambre, where its great stone bridge of Roman origin stands out. There are many legends that circulate about this ancient bridge, such as the one that says that during the Roman persecution of the disciples of the Apostle Santiago, the bridge collapsed by divine intervention, putting an end to the persecutors; the coat of arms of the Town Hall of Negreira represents this episode.

After passing Ponte Maceira, there are only a few kilometres left to reach Negreira, where you will find all the necessary services. You can visit its most emblematic monument, the Pazo de Cotón. Associated to this medieval fortress you will find the chapel of San Mauro, nowadays known as chapel do Cotón.

Continuing towards A Picota, you will enjoy a totally rural landscape, crossing large meadows, immense forests of native trees and small villages where the kindness of its people will give you the impetus to reach the goal. A few kilometres before reaching the end, you can admire the incredible views of the A Fervenza reservoir, on the descent of Monte Aro.

A Picota is a rural environment that has suffered for years the evils of depopulation. However, nowadays it has all the services to rest and recover after this long stage.

From A Picota and after crossing Olveiroa, you will head towards Cee to finally meet the Atlantic Ocean, a sign that the goal is getting closer and closer. Starting from the Castrelo reservoir, you will continue climbing until you find spectacular views of the Xallas river. Later you will find the village of Hospital, where we recommend stopping before continuing, as the rest of the route runs through lonely rural paths until you reach the fork Fisterra and Muxía. Once you reach this fork, you must take the option on the left to continue descending towards Cee. This locality located between the Touriñán cape and Fisterra cape, is part of A Costa da Morte.

From here a beautiful and quiet walk near the sea awaits you, passing through pine forests, beaches and cliffs. In Corcubión you will have to make a stop on the way to stroll through the old part of the town, declared a Historic-Artistic Site. Here, you can also bathe in the beach of Quenxe, sheltered from the winds and storms so typical of the Costa da Morte. Afterwards, the walk continues enjoying the wonderful green landscape and the rocky Atlantic coast until you reach the desired goal, Finisterre.

It will be worth a stroll through the village before setting course for the real goal, Cape Finisterre. Just 3 kilometres of ascent will take you to its famous lighthouse to contemplate one of the most spectacular sunsets in the world, with the sun setting over the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Without a doubt, you will appreciate taking a well-deserved rest after these days of cycling, strolling around Fisterra, its port and its food market; and enjoying the rich local gastronomy. After a bit of leisure tourism we recommend as a cultural plan to visit the Museum of the Sea, located in the Castle of San Carlos which was built in the eighteenth century.

This last day you are in charge, you can go back home or enjoy an extra day trip to Muxía, enjoying the wonderful Costa da Morte, its history, its legends and its gastronomy. And it is that, how well you eat in Galicia.

So if you feel like walking and you have 1 more day, we encourage you to complete the Camino to Finisterre and Muxía. This way you will finish the most magical and spiritual route in a beautiful fishing village like Muxía, a few steps away from the very important Sanctuary of Virxe da Barca and its famous magic stones: Pedra de Abalar, Pedra dos Cadrís, Pedra do Timón or the nearby Pedra dos Namorados.
