How to register to collect the Compostela: a step-by-step guide

Arriving in Santiago is the end of the Camino, but collecting the Compostela has a process of its own. There are two key moments that many pilgrims confuse: the prior online registration, done before you arrive, and collecting it in person at the Pilgrim's Office. This guide explains how each step works, both for individual pilgrims and for groups.

Arriving in Santiago is the moment every pilgrim spends kilometres imagining. But between reaching the Obradoiro square and holding the Compostela in your hands there is a process worth knowing in advance. It isn't complicated, but there are two distinct stages you need to be clear about: the online registration, done before you arrive, and the in-person collection at the Pilgrim's Office. Doing it right saves time, avoids frustration and lets you enjoy the end of the Camino de Santiago without any last-minute rush.

Step 1: the prior online registration on the Pilgrim's Office website

For some years now, the Pilgrim's Office has had an online registration system that both enables and is required to obtain the Compostela. The aim is to speed up the process at the counter and reduce waiting times, especially in high season, when queues can form. Registration is mandatory: without it, you won't be able to enter the building.

You can do it from your phone or computer at any time before arriving in Santiago, even before you start or days before you finish the Camino. There are two different forms depending on whether you are travelling alone or in a group.

Individual registration

This is the most common one. The individual registration form asks for the following details:

• Route taken and starting point.
• Means of pilgrimage: on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.
• Personal details: name, surname, age, sex, nationality and profession.
• Reason for the pilgrimage (transport): religious, spiritual, cultural or other. This detail determines whether you receive the Compostela itself or an alternative certificate.
• Dates: the date you started the Camino and the approximate date of arrival in Santiago.
• Email address to receive the confirmation code.
• Option to print a distance certificate, if you also want to certify the total distance covered. Remember that it costs 3€. If you don't choose it but later change your mind, you can always request it on site.

When you finish the registration you will receive an alphanumeric code by email. Note it down on your pilgrim's credential or save it on your phone. It is essential for entering the Office on collection day.

Group registration

If several pilgrims arrive together, there is a specific group registration that centralises the prior procedure. The form asks for the same personal details for each member, plus the group's contact information: group name, email address and approximate arrival date. All the pilgrims are added and the registration is completed in one go.

Step 2: the in-person collection at the Pilgrim's Office

The Compostela is only issued in person at the Pilgrim's Office, located at Rúa das Carretas, 33, a few metres from the Cathedral. The process differs depending on whether you go as an individual pilgrim or in a group.

Individual collection

Individual pilgrims collect their Compostela on the ground floor of the Pilgrim's Office. When you reach the building, the process works like this:

• Show your alphanumeric code at the entrance. Security staff will check it before letting you in. Without this code you won't be able to enter the building. They will give you further instructions and answer any questions.
• You will be given a ticket with a queue number. Check the waiting time by scanning the QR on the queue ticket with your phone. This lets you step out to wait over a drink or take a stroll around the city without losing your turn.
• When it's about to be your turn, go to the desk indicated on your ticket. Present your stamped credential and the staff will check that you meet the requirements. If everything is in order, you will receive your Compostela right there.

One important tip: in high season the first turns of the day can run out early. If you arrive in Santiago in the afternoon or have your return trip the same day, plan with some margin. At times, the Office cannot guarantee that the Compostela will be issued on the same day during peak periods.

Group collection

Groups have a different, faster process. They do not go through the ground-floor waiting room. A single person from the group can go directly to the lower floor of the Pilgrim's Office with all the members' stamped credentials and collect all the Compostelas at once, without each member having to queue separately.

What you need to bring on collection day

Before heading to the Pilgrim's Office, make sure you have everything you need:

• Your pilgrim's credential with all the corresponding stamps: at least two per day over the last 100 km on foot or 200 km by bicycle.
• The alphanumeric code from the online registration, noted on the credential or saved on your phone.
• Identity document (ID card or passport) to prove your identity (not mandatory, but bring it just in case).
• Patience. In high season the wait can be long. The ticket QR lets you manage it from outside, but you need to stay alert as your turn approaches.

Which documents you can obtain at the Pilgrim's Office

The Compostela is not the only document the Pilgrim's Office issues, and below we list all the documents you can obtain:

• The Compostela — the official document in Latin that certifies the pilgrimage. It is issued to all pilgrims who meet the distance and stamp requirements, regardless of the reason they indicated at registration.
• The Distance Certificate — a document linked to the Compostela that certifies the exact kilometres covered, the starting point and the dates. Remember that it costs 3€.
• The Cathedral Welcome Certificate — for pilgrims who do not meet the requirements to obtain the Compostela, or for visitors who have not walked the Camino.
• The Bolecha — a specific certificate for young children who have done the Camino with their parents and have not yet received their First Communion.

Practical tips for arrival day

The last day of the Camino brings together many emotions and also many practicalities. These tips help everything flow without a hitch.

• Do the online registration preferably before arriving. Having the code ready saves time and nerves. You can even do it before starting the Camino, or during it.
• Don't plan your return trip for the same day you arrive in high season. The wait at the Office can be long, and missing a flight by a few minutes is an avoidable setback.
• Get to the Office in the morning if you can. The turns run out sooner than you'd think, and in the afternoon the wait is usually longer.
• If you're in a group, remember that a single person can handle the collection of all the Compostelas on the lower floor, without each member having to queue separately.
