Traveling light is the key to enjoying every pedal stroke on the Camino de Santiago. Whatever the Jacobean route you take, a well-thought-out luggage will allow you to savor every ascent and descent without distractions or overloads. In this guide on what to bring to the Camino de Santiago by bike, you will find everything you need, grouped by categories and considering why it is advisable to include —or discard— each item. This way, you will prepare your panniers with confidence, avoiding forgetting the essentials but, above all, without carrying extra weight.

It is advisable to be accustomed to riding a bicycle and to train before embarking on the Camino by bike.
Your bicycle and its maintenance
The bike is your means of transport and your adventure companion: spending some time tuning it up prevents breakdowns and headaches on the route.
- Type of bike: gravel, MTB, or trekking with mixed tires.
- Clean and lubricated transmission for smooth shifts.
- Checked brakes and pads at 70% or more.
- Puncture-resistant tires at the recommended pressure.

Remember to have your bicycle in good condition before embarking on the Camino.
Cyclist clothing and footwear
The first layer of your adventure is the one that goes against your skin: breathable clothing that regulates sweat, protects against the changing winds of the pilgrimage routes, and dries quickly at the end of each stage. Equally important is the footwear: shoes that transfer energy to the pedal without sacrificing comfort when you need to walk. With a lightweight, easy-to-wash, and versatile outfit for various climates, you will avoid chafing, blisters, and unnecessary loads.
Technical Clothing
The appropriate clothing regulates temperature, prevents chafing, and keeps you dry in changing conditions.
- 2‑3 breathable t-shirts (short or long sleeve depending on the season).
- 2 padded shorts; wash them daily if possible.
- Lightweight and foldable windbreaker jacket.
- Waterproof pants and boot covers for heavy rain.
- Thin leggings for cold or rainy days.

Wearing appropriate clothing will make your Camino more bearable.
Footwear
A good footwear improves pedaling and protects your feet during walking sections or sightseeing.
- Cycling shoes with cleats and a sole suitable for walking.
- Lightweight rest shoes for the afternoons.
- Sandals or flip-flops for the shower and to allow your feet to breathe.
Accessories That Make a Difference
These accessories enhance your security and comfort, and many are mandatory by regulation or common sense; others help you organize your luggage, stay visible, and resolve unforeseen issues.
- Approved helmet (mandatory in Spain).
- Summer or winter gloves to prevent chafing.
- Sunglasses with UV filter and protection against dust and insects.
- Neck gaiter or scarf to protect your neck and face during descents.
- Lightweight cap for breaks on foot.
- Waterproof rear panniers (15‑20 L each).
- Hydration backpack or 750 ml bottles.
- Rechargeable front and rear lights.
- Medium or high-security lock.
- Multi-tool kit + 2 inner tubes, patches, and pump.
- Elastic bungees to secure a mat or extra jacket.

Make sure that the material you use is suitable for you
The route and the time of year: adapt your clothing
The route you choose and the season in which you travel will influence the clothing you need. It is not the same to cycle in the middle of August across the Castilian Plateau as it is in October along the Cantabrian coast, or to face winter stages in high mountain areas. Adapt your clothing to the expected weather for each route and season, to avoid unnecessary heat or cold.
- Summer: On inland or southern routes (such as the Silver Way or the Plateau of the French Way) the heat will be your main challenge. Prioritize very breathable and lightweight garments: short-sleeve shirts, shorts, a cap, sunglasses, and sunscreen for your skin. You can do without heavy warm clothing, but bring a lightweight waterproof windbreaker for possible summer storms. If you are piloting on routes like the Northern Way, even in summer you will encounter more rain and fog, so a rain jacket remains essential.
- Winter: In the cold months, you will need much more warmth. Add thermal layers to your luggage: thermal base layer shirt, long leggings, fleece or warm jacket, thick gloves, and a neck gaiter. On mountain stages (for example, when crossing the Pyrenees on the French Way or on the Primitive Way) you might encounter snow or ice, so include waterproof boot covers and a good rain jacket or waterproof coat. Also remember that days are shorter in winter: front and rear lights will help you be visible if it gets dark while cycling.
- Spring and autumn: The weather is more unpredictable during these seasons. Combine clothing of different thicknesses to dress in layers, so you can warm up or lighten up as temperatures rise or fall throughout the day. In spring, there are usually cool mornings and warm afternoons; in autumn, mild afternoons but cold nights. Additionally, in much of Spain (especially in the north), rain is common in both spring and autumn: always keep a waterproof windbreaker handy. With the layering strategy and the forecast for rain, you will be prepared for sudden weather changes.
