The Community of the Camino: Your own action movie (without a script and in real life)

17 January, 2026

A camp in the Camino de Santiago offers young people a transformative experience: disconnecting from screens, overcoming physical and emotional challenges, creating authentic bonds, and living a real adventure that fosters personal growth, community, and unforgettable memories.

La Comunidad del Camino de Santiago

Sometimes you have the feeling that life passes by on a screen. Scroll, like, scroll, repeat. You see people living incredible adventures while you are lying on the couch, waiting for something to happen. But what you are about to read is not about watching the lives of others. It is about grabbing your own by the lapels and shaking it. It is about a summer camp on the Camino de Santiago, which is unlike anything you have been told.

Imagine that you are the protagonist. There are no filters. There is no pause button. It is just you, a backpack, and a path that has been waiting centuries for you to set foot on it. Welcome to the Camino Community.

Spoiler alert: this is not your typical summer camp

Surely, when you hear "camp," you think of overly enthusiastic counselors forcing you to make friendship bracelets or cooperative games that are a bit cringe. Forget it. What you will find out there resembles little of what you learned in traditional camps.

Forget about boring crafts: here you come to live an odyssey

This is about something else. It is about getting up when the sun has not yet risen and feeling that the cold makes you feel more alive, while you adjust your jacket or the collar of your sweatshirt as if you were preparing for battle. You are not here to pass the time; you are here to walk towards something.

At first, you may think: "What am I doing here?". Your legs will tell you no, that you seem crazy. That doubt will try to drain your energy and leave you disillusioned, but I assure you that beneath the exhaustion there is a pulse, a desire to keep telling your story that, if you do not respond to it, will eat you from the inside. Because the Camino is a physical odyssey. It is crossing forests that seem straight out of a legend, climbing mountains that make you feel small, and arriving at stone villages where time stopped long ago. It is understanding that the epic is not in video games, but in the dust of your shoes.

The "airplane mode" of life: why disconnecting will make you feel more alive than ever

Let us be honest: we are constantly focused on getting the best photo to post immediately, as if not sharing it means it never happened. But in the Community of the Camino, magic happens when you lift your gaze from your mobile. You will discover that what determines the success of your journey is not where you go, nor what filter you use, but who you are with. And, paradoxically, sometimes you need to disconnect to truly connect. You will see that there are entire landscapes that people miss by staring at a screen, accumulating digital photos that time will erase. Here, your eyes are the only camera that matters. And I promise you that the resolution of reality surpasses 4K.

The epic adventure: kilometers that tell stories

This summer camp is a challenge. I will not lie to you. There will be tough moments. But that is where the good stuff begins.

The physical challenge: when your legs say "enough" but your mind says "keep going"

There will be days when you think you cannot take another step. You will hear other pilgrims in the distance complaining or recounting stories of accidents and blisters. But you will keep going. You will learn to coexist with your own fatigue without drama, just as you will learn to coexist with the joy of others without feeling a false euphoria, and with their pain without sinking into sadness.

It is training for life, both physical and (above all) emotional. That endurance and resilience will stay with you forever, and you will realize that you are much stronger than you think. And that feeling of power, of control over your own destiny, is addictive.

Landscapes that cannot fit in a story: discovering a world without filters

You are going to see things that will leave you breathless. And I am not talking about boring monuments. I am talking about low fog over the fields at dawn, about forests that immerse you in an almost horror movie silence, where only the songs of the birds can be heard. I am talking about paths and cities that have seen ancient medieval pilgrims pass by, places with so much history that make you feel part of something gigantic. Those moments are pure beauty, pure life.

The "Community": strangers who become family

Here comes the best part. You will probably arrive without knowing anyone, or with a couple of friends. But you will leave with a family.

Your new squad: you will find the loyal, the crazy, and those who change your life

On the Camino, high school labels disappear. It doesn't matter if you are the popular one, the geek, the athlete, or the shy one. Here we are all walkers. You will meet people who, in a matter of days, will know you better than friends you have had for years.

Perhaps you will find that new friend who sends you a message or says just the right word when you are feeling down, someone with whom you don't need to pretend, where there is no pity but camaraderie. Those people, those "strangers," will become indispensable. Because traveling alone or with new people is the best way to find good company; sometimes it scares us, but that is where the magic happens.

Code of honor: here no one gets left behind

In the Community of the Camino, you learn something profound: loyalty. If one stops, everyone stops. If one cannot carry the backpack, another will carry it. It is an unwritten pact. You will learn to say thank you, but not just any way, rather quickly, almost breathlessly, making sure the other knows how important they have been to you. You will discover that gratitude arises when you least expect it. And you will understand that true wealth is not having the latest iPhone, but having someone who bends down to pick up your backpack, or stops to give you water or a word of encouragement when you are exhausted, demonstrating that education and empathy are the most valuable things that exist.

"That night": laughter, confessions, and the fear of it ending

And then there are the nights. The nights in the shelter, when the body rests but the mind soars.

There will be one night, let’s call it "That night," that will be etched in your memory. You may take a while to fall asleep due to the emotions of the day or simply because you can't settle down: perhaps you will spend hours whispering in the dark, trying not to let the monitors hear you, and lowering your voice when they approach.

In those nighttime conversations, perhaps with the interference of snores and footsteps from other pilgrims, the world is set right. You will talk about everything and nothing. You will laugh at the day's misfortunes, at blisters, at falls. And you will feel that you never want that moment to end. You will feel that all your time passes in that "still," in that perfect present before the moment comes to say goodbye. You will enjoy seeing your friends there, tired but real.

Remembering why we are here: the end of the journey and the beginning of everything

When your child arrives in Santiago, or simply at the end of their stage, they will feel a strange mix: joy, fatigue, pride… and a small pinch of sadness. They will discover that, although it sounds like a cliché, the Camino is not made to arrive, but to be in it. They will look back and see that they have changed. That they no longer need to collect likes, because they have found something much more valuable: a real community, moments that cannot be edited, and an adventure that gives meaning to an entire summer.

And when they return home and miss that routine of boots, laughter, and nighttime confidences, they will only have to return to that memory: the rain, the effort, the shared steps, what they learned about themselves and others. It is a memory that does not fade, an invisible thread that will continue to pull at them for life… and that perhaps, someday, they will want to live again.
