Stages of French Way with dog from Sarria (5 stages)

Day 1. Arrival in Sarria

You will start your French Way from the historic town of Sarria, in the province of Lugo. A place where you can enjoy a first day strolling through its streets, discovering its monuments or relaxing on one of its terraces enjoying a lively pilgrim atmosphere in the company of your pet. Let yourself be invaded by the thousands of sensations and emotions of nerves and joy that you will experience as soon as you arrive. And to rest, tomorrow the adventure begins.

Note: We understand the challenges of traveling with pets on public transport. The optimal way to reach Sarria is undoubtedly by your own vehicle. Many pilgrims opt to park their cars in Sarria or Santiago and utilize our private transfer service at the beginning or end of their Camino journey. Contact us for more information!

Day 2. Sarria stage- Portomarín (22 km)

Well, now we’re off to your first day as pilgrims! You will start your French Way by walking the first stage from Sarria to Portomarín, an easy and pilgrim-friendly itinerary. You will cross rivers and forests and find small churches and villages, with plenty of places to stop and have a drink. We are sure that your dog will enjoy running along these magical paths! Pilgrims say that this is one of the most beautiful stages of the French route, so you know, lucky to start here. As soon as you arrive on the banks of the river Miño, you will find the charming village of Portomarín, resplendent with its white houses and slate roofs. An end of stage that you will fall in love with and that keeps a secret under the waters of the reservoir. All you have to do now is relax and enjoy!

Day 3. Portomarín stage - Palas de Rei (25 km)

One thing is clear: you’re likely to find it hard to leave Portomarín this morning. This small town has a certain charm that captivates visitors like a magnet. Perhaps it’s the quaint streets, the lively atmosphere, or the warmth of its people.

Today, your journey takes you to Palas de Rei, covering 25 kilometers of varied terrain, including both roads and mountains. Along the way, you’ll come across the Castromaior site, showcasing the ancient settlements of Galicia’s inhabitants. Upon reaching Palas de Rei, you’ll have the chance to explore several archaeological remains from the megalithic culture, such as dolmens, mámoas, and castros. As you can see, Palas de Rei promises an educational and insightful experience about this historic land.

Day 4. Palas de Rei stage - Arzúa (29 km)

This is the longest stage of the French Way within the Galician community, with 29 kilometers separating you from your destination. We recommend taking it easy and enjoying the surroundings, as it’s one of the most beautiful stretches of the route. As you enter the province of A Coruña, dirt roads, lush forests, and medieval bridges will guide your way to Santiago de Compostela.

A stop in Melide is a must for every pilgrim, as it’s the capital of Galician octopus. You can taste this delicacy at any of its many pulperías. After replenishing your strength, the remaining kilometers to Arzúa won’t require much effort. Once you reach Arzúa, you’ll have the rest of the day to relax body and mind.

In Arzúa, don’t miss the opportunity to taste the typical cheese for which it’s known: Denomination of Origin Arzúa-Ulloa, along with other local specialties.

Day 5. Arzúa stage - Pedrouzo (19 km)

Today begins the penultimate stage of your French Way. A pleasant walk through comfortable and flat terrain, with plenty of bars and restaurants that will encourage you to take it easy. Probably, as you walk, you will notice and realize that a kind of collective emotion begins to exist among the pilgrims. Do you feel it too?

The feeling of excitement, nerves and joy is the most characteristic of the end of the stage in O Pedrouzo. The advice, and you will see that everyone does the same, is to go to bed early to get up early the next day and start the stage very early. This way you will arrive earlier to Santiago and you will have more time in the city.

Day 6. Pedrouzo stage- Santiago de Compostela (19 km)

At last, you’ve reached the final stage of your journey along the French Way with your furry friend from Sarria. Remember, the earlier you start walking today, the sooner you’ll arrive in Santiago de Compostela.

Upon reaching Monte do Gozo, take in the breathtaking sight of the cathedral towers on the horizon. It’s a rewarding moment before you complete the last few kilometers and make your grand entrance at the Plaza del Obradoiro.

Congratulations, you’ve made it to Santiago! Celebrate the completion of your Camino de Santiago adventure with your faithful companion by your side. Now, it’s time to pick up your Compostela certificate and enjoy exploring the charming Galician capital.

Day 7. End of the trip
