Stages
- day 1
Arrival at Vigo
- day 2
Stage 1. Vigo - Arcade (23 km)
You say goodbye to Vigo along Rúa Urzaiz and pick up the yellow arrows again heading toward Arcade. The day gives you beautiful views of the Ría de Vigo, the Rego de Fondón waterfall and the climb to the church of San Andrés de Cedeira, before joining the central Camino Portugués at Redondela. You finish in Arcade, the oyster capital.
- day 3
Stage 2. Arcade - Pontevedra (12 km)
You leave Arcade crossing the historic Pontesampaio bridge, the site of the battle against Napoleon's troops in 1809. Afterwards you walk the evocative Roman road of the Brea Vella da Canicouva, with its great stone slabs, through woods and villages. The stage ends in Pontevedra, for many the prettiest city in Galicia: lose yourself in its cobbled streets and squares before resting.
- day 4
Stage 3. Pontevedra - Caldas de Reis (21 km)
A gentle, pleasant stage. You leave Pontevedra through the Plaza de la Peregrina and cross the Puente do Burgo to head into a lovely rural setting, in the shade of centuries-old oaks. The small detour to the Barosa river waterfall is well worth it before reaching Caldas de Reis, a thermal town since ancient times: relax in its waters and follow its water route among waterfalls and mills.
- day 5
Stage 4. Caldas de Reis - Padrón (18.6 km)
The second-to-last day before Santiago. You leave Caldas de Reis along rural paths, pass through Valga and Pontecesures — the old "Port of Compostela" — and cross the river Ulla to enter Padrón. Here Jacobean legend hangs in the air: its church holds the Pedrón, where tradition says the boat carrying the Apostle's remains was moored. Try its famous peppers and turn in early: tomorrow, Santiago.
- day 6
Stage 5. Padrón - Santiago de Compostela (24.3 km)
Last day! Get up early and set off from Padrón soon: the excitement will make the kilometres fly by as you cross Iria Flavia and the last villages toward Compostela. And suddenly, the Plaza del Obradoiro and the Cathedral of Santiago right in front of you: you've completed your Camino Portuguese. If you've walked at least the last 100 km, collect your Compostela at the Pilgrim's Office (Rúa Carretas) and don't miss the pilgrim's mass or the rest of the Galician capital.
- day 7
End of the trip
After your last night, you check out of your accommodation and your trip comes to an end.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Will I be sleeping in the same hostel as the rest of the group? And in the same room?
You may end up staying at the same hostel as some of your group members, but not everyone will stay in the same hostel since each one has limited capacity. The accommodations will be very close to each other, so it will be easy to stay in touch the next morning and continue walking and making friends. -
What is the daily itinerary like?
Every day the monitors call the group in the morning for a brief informational meeting about the stage: what it is like, what not to miss, which bars to stop at, etc. Then, walking begins, and each person sets their own pace, without the need to go together.
The pilgrim can decide their pace and timing. For example, for lunch: you can stop to eat at some of the bars along the Camino or at the end of the stage.
The arrival time will depend a bit on this, on your stops to rest, take photos, have a drink, get to know the place… However, generally, it tends to be between 2 PM and 4 PM.
But as mentioned, regarding the arrival at the end of the stage, there is no fixed or established time.
Moreover, our advice is to stretch your time on the Camino and take it easy, to enjoy it better. Your accommodation is reserved, and Santiago de Compostela has been waiting for you for centuries. What’s the rush?
Upon arrival, with your luggage already at the accommodation, it’s time to shower and rest. And in the evening, the monitors may suggest some activity… or surprise you with a little surprise!
And then, it’s time to have dinner and rest to prepare for a new stage.
-
What meal plan can I book depending on the type of trip?
Whether you can include meals depends directly on the type of trip you choose. Here is how it works in each case:
Self-guided trips
With this option you have total flexibility. You can choose between Room only, Bed and breakfast or Half board, adapting the trip to your preferences.
Group trips
These trips are run exclusively on a Room only basis.
Why? Because of the group dynamics and the pace of the Camino, it is impossible to coordinate fixed meal times for all members of the group at the establishments.
Your peace of mind comes first: Don't worry about food! The Camino has a huge range of places to eat. What's more, our guides know the area perfectly and will recommend the best places each day to enjoy the local cuisine, adapting to your tastes and budget.
Trips with dogs
With the pet option, it is not possible to book a meal plan in advance either. This lets us make sure that both you and your furry companion are free to choose pet-friendly places as you go, without the restrictions of a set group menu.
Note: Whatever the type of trip, you will always have plenty of options to eat well at every stage. The Camino is also a food experience!
-
How do you get to Vigo to start the Camino?
Vigo has its own airport (Vigo-Peinador), a high-speed train station and good bus connections, being the largest city in Galicia.
-
Does the Camino from Vigo qualify you for the Compostela?
Yes. From Vigo you walk 100 km to Santiago, the distance on foot the Pilgrim's Office requires for the Compostela. Get your pilgrim passport stamped along the Camino (at least two stamps a day over the last 100 km) and show it when you arrive. The pilgrim passport is included in your trip.
-
What happens on the first day in Vigo with the group?
There is no walking that day: it is the day you arrive in Vigo. The guides gather the group for a welcome meeting to get to know each other, explain how the trip works and answer your questions, and they hand out the pilgrim credentials and the luggage tags. Afterwards you have the afternoon to stroll around the old town (casco vello) and look out over the ría with your new Camino companions.
-
How many people are in the group on the Portuguese Camino from Vigo?
The group has 30 places. Even so, you don't have to walk all together: everyone walks at their own pace, with a guide who accompanies you 24 hours a day. If you are travelling alone, it is an easy way to meet people and share the Camino from Vigo.
-
When does the group on the Portuguese Camino from Vigo depart?
The group departs on set dates, which you can see in the available dates section of this page; if none of them suits you, get in touch. About a month before departure we close the group and send you the travel documents: names of the accommodation, welcome meeting, dossier with recommendations and insurance policy.
