If we are lovers and free defenders of animals we must take into account associations like APACA. There are thousands of associations and animal shelters in Spain, non-profit, with the sole purpose of helping those animals that are abandoned.

APACA, was created in 2015 and it is a Galician animal shelter with a single purpose, to help all those animals that have been abandoned by their owners. According to its motto, In APACA, we collect, care for and rehome them , or what is the same, in APACA, we collect, care for and find them a home.

This association was created due to the helpless situation of animals in Galicia, since the authorities did not and do not take care of their care, relocation or even enable shelters for them. Throughout this article we will delve more about this association and its projects, and if you want to get involved in the cause we will tell you how.

Main Activities of the Protectora

Among the many causes for which this shelter is dedicated, the main one is the salvation of animals that are abandoned. Since its creation, every year they receive more and more animals, sometimes too many, and it is difficult for them to take care of them all because there is no government agency to help them.

However, thanks to the work they do, they manage to get around 80% of them adopted and placed in a good home. They all have the right to a happy life. They are mainly in charge of:

Pick up and care for abandoned dogs on the Camino de Santiago. They are in charge of checking if their health is in danger, feeding them, washing them and giving them a roof over their heads so that they can stay warm and safe.

Look for people to adopt them, since not everyone is able or has a suitable place for the animal. Whether for adoption or foster care, the shelter tries to choose a good home, a better life.

Carry out awareness campaigns, both for animal ownership and explaining the situation in which they find themselves or why not abandon them. The protector denounces the inactivity of the public administration and takes the reins to raise awareness of the issue.

We talked about the main activities of the protector taking into account that it is not long since its creation and that its interest is to ensure the protection of animals without the help of the government. But their activity goes much further, and day by day they work on more and more projects, growing as an entity and above all as people.

How Can I Help?

As we learn more about the association we may ask ourselves the most essential question. If they don’t receive money for the facilities, care and other materials they need , how do they do it? Well, thanks to its dissemination and awareness campaigns, more and more people collaborate in one way or another according to their possibilities or availability.

Its main activity takes place in Santiago de Compostela, but this does not prevent us from helping and collaborating from anywhere in Spain or the world. Helping is a word that knows no boundaries or limitations.

Donations:

Unfortunately, this world is driven primarily by economic power and it is essential for APACA to continue its work and continue saving lives. Every grain of sand counts, so it is possible to make a financial donation of the amount you want to collaborate if you have no other means. Not only can we make a financial donation but we can also donate material that is needed, every act counts.

Volunteering:

Cheer up and participate. APACA has thought about the possibilities of each person, and it is true that sometimes, many people want to volunteer and help as much as they can, but it is impossible for them all year round. For this reason you have two options. The first of these is to be so for the whole year, during which you will be trained and will fulfil the five-day attendance commitment. You will be in charge of various tasks that will be entrusted to you and rotate with other volunteers (taking care of the animals, their hygiene, cleaning the facilities, etc). The second option is for all those people who can only stay for a certain amount of time during the year. This volunteering is carried out in the summer months, when there is a higher volume of abandoned and collected animals.

Adoption:

Be responsible, a dog is not a whim or a toy. If you opt for this type of help, you will take in one of the animals that are in the shelter. Not only will you be helping the shelter, you will be giving a full and happy life to your new life companion. Perhaps this is the option that can attract our attention the most and the one that completes us the most day by day.

Teaming:

First of all, what does this aid consist of? Well, it is an online tool in charge of collecting small donations of 1 euro per month. The Teaming philosophy is that we can’t do much alone, but together we will do great things.

Donations

Financial support is essential to be able to persist in their work. Alone they simply couldn’t. If you want to help, make a donation. Every grain of sand counts. Your support is important

Apaca and the Camino de Santiago

For years, pilgrims from all over the world who make the Camino de Santiago, denounce the number of loose or abandoned dogs that are on their way to Santiago de Compostela. This shelter is mainly responsible for the collection and care of animals that are abandoned or lost along the Camino. He denounces the situation that year after year is getting worse and tries to put means to control it.

Most of the dogs that they take in come from the Camino, so APACA immersed itself in a rather striking project, the creation of a special credential for dogs. Our agency wanted to collaborate, as every day more and more people want to undertake the road accompanied by his faithful friend.

CANINE CREDENTIAL

If you decide to do the Camino de Santiago with your dog do not hesitate to get the credential specially created for him. Just like the pilgrim’s credential that we will carry when we do the Camino and that we will stamp, our dog will stamp his credential in the same way. Thanks to the shelter and this great project, our friend and faithful companion will be able to get his canine Compostelaat the office on arrival in Santiago.
