Travel Itinerary
You will start the first four stages of the Way of the Lighthouses from Malpica de Bergantiños, in the province of A Coruña. A historic town, with a strong seafaring flavour, where you can get to know in situ the hard work of the seafarers and even mingle with them in one of the bars in the port. Take a deep breath and familiarize yourself with the smell of the sea, as it will be your inseparable companion in this exciting adventure that has only just begun. Now it’s time to rest, tomorrow the curtain opens.
The magic begins! Let’s discover the mythical lighthouses of the Costa da Morte! With an affordable mileage, many ups and downs and different types of terrain we started the way from the same port of Malpica with destination to the bucolic beach of Niñóns. There will be beaches, cliffs, small inhabited places, several streams and springs, and of course, lighthouses. This stage will always run parallel to the sea, and you will be able to enjoy the fresh ocean breeze. Take it easy, as the second half of the stage is a bit more demanding. Once you have passed the Punta Nariga lighthouse, the beautiful beach of Niñóns awaits you, and we will be there to welcome you on your first day and to accompany you in your well-deserved rest at the end of the stage. Congratulations on your debut!
The road is starting to get interesting, because today a harder but even more exciting stage awaits you. As we go deeper into the Costa da Morte, the Way of the Lighthouses will seduce you more and more.
We will leave Niñóns Beach to Ponteceso, a historic village where you will discover part of the soul of Galicia. Combining different terrains, although mostly fishermen’s paths, you will arrive at the disturbing Roncudo Lighthouse, whose cape is an orchard of barnacles, that exquisite Galician delicacy honoured in the famous festival that is celebrated every summer in the fishing village of Corme. After a brief stop in this town, you will reach Ponteceso, your final stop and the birthplace of the Galician bard Eduardo Pondal, composer of the lyrics of the Galician Hymn and a very important part of Galician culture.
This stage is very special, as it is one of the few that goes a little into the lands of the Costa da Morte. The reason is worth it, because you will know important and well preserved heritage elements of the Galician Neolithic as the Dolmen of Dombate.
With an affordable mileage, you will leave Ponteceso behind through the estuary of the Anllóns River, with spectacular landscapes and a place of great ornithological importance. Through the path of Rego dos Muíños you will get to know the milling culture of Galicia and, after the ascent to Monte Castelo, we are convinced that you will fall in love with this adventure. Back to the coast, more beaches and small headlands will lead you to the beautiful village of Laxe, where in any of the terraces of its port you can enjoy a well-deserved refreshment and rest.
Don’t let the sadness of the last day invade you: this is the easiest, shortest and most beautiful stage of this journey. Leaving Laxe behind, the sea will give you, if the tide allows it, a beautiful surprise: the curious Playa de los Cristales, created by nature itself. The great beaches of the Costa da Morte will begin to follow one after the other, immense sandy areas such as Soesto or Traba that will not leave you indifferent. You will arrive at Camelle, where we recommend a stop to learn about the history of Man the German, and shortly after you will have reached your destination and the end of this adventure, the small fishing village of Arou.
This last day you decide, you can go back home or enjoy a day on the Costa da Morte. Or, who knows, maybe you’re just hungry for more. By the way, did you know that all roads end in Finisterre? If you feel like walking and you have 4 more days, we encourage you to complete the 4 remaining stages of this route. You already know what this Way of the Lighthouses is all about, and the heart of the Costa da Morte and the great experience of the extraordinary sunset of the Finisterre Lighthouse are still waiting for you.
