Bulnes. Who hasn’t heard of this little town belonging to the Council of Asturias in Cabrales? It is a charming region, located within the National Park of Picos de Europa and from where doing rural tourism is a great adventure. You can’t get to Bulnes by car, but you can get there on foot or, better yet, by a funicular railway installed for the use of locals and especially tourists.

The popular funicular of Bulnes also serves to reach the village of Poncebos. This kind of railroad runs through one of the tunnels excavated under the well-known Peña Maín. It was created to counteract the isolation and lack of communication in which both villages were located, which in previous times could only be reached by unpaved paths.

Now, going up to Bulnes by funicular will take you 7 minutes during a 5-kilometer journey that will be interrupted by a drop of at least 400 meters, so you will have to finish the road on foot. If you want to know more about this great adventure, don’t forget to take a look at the guide we have prepared below:

In high season, it runs from 10 am to 8 pm often every 30 minutes.
In low season it works from 10 am to 12:30 pm. But also from 12 hours to 18 hours.

On foot

The walk to Bulnes begins in the town of Poncebos. It is a non-linear tourist trekking route. That is to say, you will return by the same way you started. It is a low-difficulty route, perfectly signposted, with 8 kilometers round trip that you can complete in a time span of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The crossing will take you to the Jaya Bridge, from where you will leave for the Tejo Channel. Then, you will find the unevenness that you will have to overcome, so we recommend good physical condition and above all patience.

You will have the opportunity to appreciate a small stream that you will have to follow until the place of departure of the funicular. At that moment, a less forced route to Bulnes begins.
