Travel Itinerary
Puebla de Sanabria is a beautiful village where you can discover the structure and the typical architecture of the houses in this area. You should visit the Castle of the Counts of Benavente, one of the best preserved in Spain, and the church of Nuestra Señora del Azogue. If you have time, a visit not to be missed is the Natural Park of Sanabria Lake.
You will start your Via de la Plata from the beautiful town of Puebla de Sanabria, heading towards Terroso. Afterwards you will reach Requejo and the route will go through wooded paths until you reach Padornelo. From an altitude of 1300 meters you will continue towards Lubián through the Alta Sanabria.
In Lubián you can visit the castro of As Muradellas and the glacial valley of Fraga de Osa. You can also visit the Sanctuary of La Tuiza, declared of Cultural Interest, the church of San Mamés and the Cortello de los Lobos.
You will start walking across Lubián through its lower part, until you cross the river Tuela and arrive at the Sanctuary of Tuiza. From here you will start the ascent towards the pass of A Canda, entering Galicia after crossing it. Before arriving at A Gudiña, you will pass through the town of A Mezquita.
In A Gudiña, you will be able to know the typical architecture of the villages of the eastern Galician mountains, to know the typical handicraft of the place and to enjoy for the first time in all the way the rich Galician gastronomy. Courage pilgrims! the goal is getting closer and closer.
From A Gudiña your route will pass through Serra Seca, an area where you will be able to see a multitude of abandoned villages. From here you will get to Venda Do Espiño and Venda de Teresa, to later enter Vilariño de Conso. Walking through the surroundings of the Parque Natural do Invernadoiro, you will approach Campobecerros and cross it to the small village of Portocamba. From here you will begin an ascent until you reach the Pilgrim’s Cross, from where you will begin to descend to As Eiras. The last stretch of the stage crosses the Cereixo river to reach Laza, the end of the stage.
The town of Laza is well known in Galicia for its tradition of “entroido” (carnival). Here you can visit the church of San Juan de Laza and enjoy a good Galician stew to regain your strength.
You will start the stage heading to the village of Soutelo Verde and then arrive at Tamicelas, where you can visit the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. From here you will ascend through Monte Requeixada to Alberguería (900m) and then Vilar de Barrio, from where you will descend through forest paths to the valley of Allariz. Before arriving at Xunqueira de Ambía, you will walk among agricultural places, the village of Bóveda and paths surrounded by oak woods.
In Xunqueira de Ambía you can visit the collegiate church of Santa María la Real, founded in the 10th century, and also its Romanesque church, which has an 18th century organ. But above all, you will be able to enjoy the landscape and the wonderful natural environment that surrounds you.
You will start the last stage of this section to Ourense, starting from Xunqueira de Ambía and crossing the places of A Pousa, Salgueiros and Gaspar. You will cross the railway track and continue along A Castellana, to dive into the industrial estate of San Cibrao das Viñas. You will continue through Seixalbo, already in the municipality of Ourense, until you reach the centre, the end of the stage.
Ourense, is the capital of the homonymous province. This city, crossed by the river Minho, has its identifier in the many bridges that cross the river. You will be able to visit its Cathedral (dating from the 12th century) in which the Portico of Paradise stands out. You can also visit the convent of San Francisco, its very well preserved old town and above all, the thermal baths, where you can relax and rest after the walk.
So much for your Camino Sanabrés. Are you still hungry for more? Remember that only 5 stages separate you from Santiago de Compostela; we assure you that it will be worth adding a few more days to your trip and enjoy the moment you enter the Plaza del Obradoiro. It’s up to you!
