We know that the family always travels together and your pet is a very important part of your life. For this reason we want your dog also enjoy the experience of the French Way from Sarria and turn it into a real peRRegrino.

On this trip you will walk with your dog the last 110 kilometers of the French Way from Sarria in 6 stages, the most popular route among pilgrims and the perfect choice if it is your first time on the Camino de Santiago. The stages are perfect for walking with your dog, as there are hardly any road sections and it runs mainly through rural areas.

This time we added an extra day to the trip, as a result of dividing the longest stage of 30 kilometers in two. A much easier route for those dogs that are not used to walking such long distances. The perfect excuse to take it easy and enjoy the experience!

You will have spacious en-suite rooms in hostels, hotels and rural houses, where, of course, your pet will be with you at all times. We include the luggage transport service between the stages, and you will have the option to hire private transfers forgetting about the car and the restrictive measures that public transport has for our little ones.

And if that wasn’t enough, we will give you the canine credential that you can stamp to prove, once you arrive in Santiago, that your dog is also a champion.

Travel Itinerary

You will start your French Way with dog from the historic town of Sarria, in the province of Lugo. A place where you can enjoy a first day strolling through its streets, discovering its monuments or relaxing on one of its terraces enjoying a lively pilgrim atmosphere in the company of your dog. Let yourself be invaded by the thousands of sensations and emotions of nerves and joy that you will experience as soon as you arrive. And to rest, tomorrow the adventure begins.

Note: We know how difficult it is to travel by public transport with your pet, so the best option to get to Sarria is without a doubt to do it in your own vehicle. Most pilgrims who do the Camino de Santiago with their dog choose to leave their car in Sarria or Santiago and hire our private transfer service at the beginning or end of the Camino. Contact us!

Well, now we’re off to our first day as pilgrims! You will start your French Way by walking the first stage from Sarria to Portomarín, an easy and pilgrim-friendly itinerary. You will cross rivers and forests and find small churches and villages, with plenty of places to stop and have a drink. We are sure that your dog will enjoy running along these magical paths! Pilgrims say that this is one of the most beautiful stages of the French route, so you know, lucky to start here. As soon as you arrive on the banks of the river Miño, you will find the charming village of Portomarín, resplendent with its white houses and slate roofs. An end of stage that you will fall in love with and that keeps a secret under the waters of the reservoir. All you have to do now is relax and enjoy!

One thing is clear: it is very likely that you will not want to leave Portomarín this morning. This small town has a “je ne sais quoi” that hooks people like a magnet. It is probably because of the charm of its streets, the good atmosphere and how nice its people are.

On this day you will head to Palas de Rei, a stage with some unevenness in which you will combine road and mountain along 25 kilometres. During the tour you will discover the Castromaior site, a good example of a settlement of the ancient inhabitants of Galicia. Once in Palas de Rei, you will have the opportunity to visit several archaeological remains of the megalithic culture such as dolmens, as well as mámoas and castros. As you can see, Palas de Rei will offer you a very didactic stay about this land.

Short stage that will be a pleasant walk through small villages, hermitages, crossroads, forests and green meadows where your dog will be able to run freely. Walking only 15 kilometres, we can sleep a little longer and enjoy a relaxed breakfast before heading towards Melide.

The stage has progressive slopes of little difficulty. Once we arrive in Melide, we can enjoy a pleasant afternoon strolling through its streets, but not before tasting its famous octopus á feira in any of its pulperías.

Moreover, in Melide, you will have the opportunity to appreciate the Cruceiro, dated as the oldest in Galicia; and visit the Museo da Terra de Melide, whose building was an old pilgrims’ hospital founded in 1502.

Although it is also a short stage, it requires a little more effort than the previous one as it is more hilly. However, we assure you that the effort will be worth it when you find yourself surrounded by extraordinary Atlantic forests. And if the weather is good, don’t forget your swimsuit. When you get to Ribadiso de Abaixo, you can swim in the river and enjoy the beautiful scenery and the magical environment that accompanies this small village.

Once in Arzúa you will have all the services to stock up and rest. You should not miss tasting the typical cheese to which they give their name: Denomination of Origin Arzúa-Ulloa; accompanied by other typical products of the area.

Today begins the penultimate stage of your French Way. A pleasant walk through comfortable and flat terrain, with plenty of bars and restaurants that will encourage you to take it easy. Probably, as you walk, you will notice and realize that a kind of collective emotion begins to exist among the pilgrims. Do you feel it too?

The feeling of excitement, nerves and joy is the most characteristic of the end of the stage in O Pedrouzo. The advice, and you will see that everyone does the same, is to go to bed early to get up early the next day and start the stage very early. This way you will arrive earlier to Santiago and you will have more time in the city.

At last the last stage of your journey is here. As we said before, the sooner you start walking today the better, because the sooner you will get to Santiago de Compostela. Today the rural environment will become increasingly urbanized, so we recommend extreme caution and take your pet on a leash at all times.

Once you arrive at Monte do Gozo, you will discover that pleasant sensation when you first see the towers of the cathedral. A perfect panoramic view before savouring your last kilometres and making the triumphal entrance to the Plaza del Obradoiro.

You are in Santiago! Feel happy to have completed your Camino de Santiago in the company of your inseparable four-legged friend. Now you just need to pick up your certificate of Compostela and enjoy an incredible day getting to know the Galician capital.

Congratulations! You have completed with your dog the French Way from Sarria. This last day you are in charge, you can go back home or enjoy one more day in Santiago. And how beautiful is Compostela.

Did you know that all roads end in Finisterre? If you feel like walking and you have 5 days more, we encourage you to complete with your pet the 6 stages that separate Santiago from Finisterre. The most magical and spiritual route that hides real treasures such as Ponte Maceira, one of the most beautiful villages in Spain or the extraordinary sunset of the Finisterre lighthouse.
