THE FRENCH WAY WITH YOUR DOG: FROM SARRIA TO SANTIAGO (6 STAGES)
To do the Camino accompanied by your dog is undoubtedly a wonderful experience for both. The question that may arise is: where will sleep my faithful friend? But you don’t have to worry, we have selected the best accommodations that allow us to host the dogs together with their owners.
Arrival in Sarria (Lugo)
The traveller is responsible to arrive at the given accomodation on the chosen date. These day is a good chance to visit the city of Sarria and to rest. Once in the accomoddation you will receive the pilgrims credentials: one for you and another one specially designed for your dog.
Sarria – Portomarín
Departure time is up to each pilgrim. The duration of each stage is approximated and may vary depending on the pace of the traveller.
The first part of the stage is characterized by landscapes and nature. A very comfortable path for the pilgrim who will not only find beauty in the landscape but also will have the opportunity to see some monuments such as the Churches of Ferreiros and Barbadelos, or the Fortress of San Nicolás. A few kilometers before reaching the end, we will find the Belesar basin near to Miño River, an indicator that we are already arriving. Finally we will reach Portomarín. End of the stage and arrival at the accommodation.
Portomarín – Palas de Rei
The difficulty of the path remains low. We will find some paved areas in contrast with the green landscapes. During the walk we will have the chance to see the famous cruceiros and also we can contemplate two Monasterys: Vilar de Donas and San Salvador. It is an easy walk until getting to Palas de Rei.
Palas de Rei – Melide
The difficulty does not increase. An easy stage that goes mainly through dirt paths and typical Galician forest. We will cross medieval bridges and small villages until getting to Melide. Once in Melide we should follow the paved road, just a few kilometers away, we will find the most famous “Pulpería”, one of the best places to try the Galician Octopus. Dont forget to stop by one of this “Pulperias”. The rest of the day is perfect for visiting Melide and preparing for next stage.
Melide – Arzúa
A stage that requires more effort than the previous one because of the irregularitys in the ground level. From Melide until “Kilometro 50” there are no difficulties, we will cross land paths and a medieval bridge in the middle of the forest. After the bridge we will have to climb the mountain to get to our destination. There are two possible routes, if we choose left road it is longer but more beautiful, if we choose right road is shorter and more suitable for the dog specially if you are tired. After crossing the stone bridge we are arriving to Arzúa.
Arzúa – Pedrouzo
It is the shorter and easiest stage of the entire tour. Its beauty will make us invest the time saved in stopping to look carefully at every detail. We will find amazing landscape and historical monuments before to arrive at Pedrouzo and find the accommodation.
Pedrouzo – Santiago de Compostela
The last and the most exciting of the stages, after 5 hard days walking we will finally arrive to our goal, Santiago de Compostela.
The shortest stage but one of the most exciting. We highly recommend to start walking early in order to arrive to Santiago as soon as possible to enjoy the rest of the day in the city.
Monte Do Gozo its a strategic point, located just 4 km from the Cathedral. Once there we will observe in the distance the towers of the long-awaited Cathedral of Santiago and we will feel a great personal satisfaction. We must let ourselves be guided downhill, the end of our Camino is near. We will arrive at Obradoiro Square, where the Cathedral is located.
Santiago de Compostela
Mission completed. After sealing our credential at every stage and collecting our Compostela, we deserve this great reward. A good opportunity to get to know the city, enjoy its culture, people and gastronomy, after all the effort invested you’ve earned it.
