The Galician section of the Camino del Norte from Ribadeo starts off strong. You will start your pilgrimage in a small fishing village in the province of Lugo. Famous for having one of the most spectacular beaches in the world. The Cathedrals Beach is a real work of art, a natural wonder that surprises with the arches and domes that the sea and the wind have been carved into the rock over the centuries.

The Camino del Norte is full of contrasts. You will say goodbye to the coastal landscape to enter the interior of the province of Lugo, passing through important historical towns such as Lourenzá or Mondoñedo, former capital of the Kingdom of Galicia. As you advance, the horizon softens as you enter the region of A Terra Chá, crossing an endless succession of tiny villages in a completely rural environment specialised in cattle and dairy farming.

A path that invites you to get lost and find yourself again, enjoying the solitude in an incomparable natural setting.

Travel Itinerary

Ribadeo is the capital of the eastern Mariña lucense. It is a place to start the North Way, very popular with pilgrims who do not have enough days to complete a longer section of this itinerary (Irún – Santiago). Ribadeo is right on the natural and political border with Asturias, so you can discover the cultural relations and influences on both sides of the estuary. In addition to visiting the old town, what you should not miss under any circumstances, is to visit the beach of As Catedrais. However, to gain access, you must apply for a ticket on the website in advance, otherwise you will have to be content to see it from the top of the cliff. Remember, too, that the beach is only accessible at low tide.

Today’s road is criss-crossed by continuous undulating forms in which high ground alternates with valleys full of rich green pastures dedicated to livestock farming. This bucolic walk to Lourenzá allows you to get to know one of the most important economic activities of the country, cattle farming. Once you get to Lourenzá… from the faba beans with clams that you could have eaten in Vegadeo the day before, today you go to the fabas de potaje with its black pudding, its chorizo and its delicious lacón (pork shoulder). Lourenzá is famous for its delicious beans, with which you can taste one of the best stews of your life.

In today’s stage we change the environment completely, entering little by little in the region of Terra Chá. Terra Chá literally means “Flat land” and that is how it is. Geographically, Abadín sits on a topographically flat area, surrounded by hills: on one side the Sierra do Xistral and on the other the Sierra de Toxiza. If you don’t know the Sierra do Xistral, we recommend you to do so, as it has unique peat bog ecosystems in Galicia. But undoubtedly, the highlight of the stage will be Mondoñedo, ancient kingdom of Galicia, and its monuments. Once in Abadín, you will have everything you need to rest and get your strength back, it’s getting closer!

Today’s journey alternates between dirt tracks and asphalt, crossing the parishes of Ponterroxal, O Rei and Candia, until you reach the village of Martiñán, where there is a beautiful bridge over which the route passes and which you will reach halfway through the stage. Villalba is considered the capital of Terra Chá, a region whose main source of income is livestock, thanks to its vast green pastures. In this village you can visit the Tower of the Andrade, nowadays they are the remains of a feudal castle that works as a Parador de turismo.

Although this area does not have a great architectural wealth, it offers the walker a large number of bars, inns and grills where you can enjoy a good churrascada of excellent beef.

This is a stage of little difficulty as it runs along flat roads. During the itinerary you will be able to enjoy the dense forests and green meadows that make up the landscape of the place. You will also have to cross the river twice at the villages of San Xoán de Alba or Pedrouzos.

Once in Baamonde, we recommend spending some time visiting the tourist attractions of this town, among which the Casa Museo Víctor Corral, the Torre de Camarasa or its popular thousand-year-old chestnut tree stand out.

During this stage you will walk along the course of the river Parga until you will have to cross it at a certain point to reach your destination, the village of Miraz. Before arriving you will leave behind some small villages like San Breixo or Carballedo.

Once in Miraz, we recommend you to visit the Church or its Tower, the two most iconic points of this village and then rest and recharge your batteries for the next stage.

Note:
Since the original stage from Baamonde to Sobrado dos Monxes is a whopping 39.8 kilometres long and there is no intermediate accommodation on the Camino, we have decided to split the stage to the small village of Miraz and spend the night in a beautiful rural tourism house located a few kilometres from the village. All transfers are included.

Leaving Miraz behind, a gentle ascent begins towards the Alto de Mámoa. In this stage the route enters for the first time in the province of A Coruña, it is a quiet stage where you will pass through several villages practically uninhabited. There are few places to stock up on supplies, so we recommend that you carry everything you need to face the stage in your backpack.

Once in Sobrado dos Monxes we recommend visiting its famous Monastery of Santa María, inhabited by Benedictine monks and which today also houses the pilgrims’ hostel.

At this stage the Northern Way merges with the last stretch of the French Way. Probably, if you are doing the Camino in spring or summer, the most characteristic thing for you today will be that suddenly there will be a lot more pilgrims. This is due to the confluence of many of the Jacobean routes that come from the east of the peninsula in the surroundings of Arzúa and Palas de Rei, in addition to the great affluence that has the French way. So you know, time to make more friends before you get to your destination! The stage ends in Arzúa, home of one of the best cheeses in the country. You will see how delicious it is to taste a portion of Arzúa-Ulloa Denomination of Origin cheese accompanied by a good glass of red wine. And then to rest!

Today begins the penultimate stage of your Camino del Norte. A pleasant walk through comfortable and flat terrain, with plenty of bars and restaurants that will encourage you to take it easy. Probably, as you walk, you will notice and realize that a kind of collective emotion begins to exist among the pilgrims. Do you feel it too?

The feeling of excitement, nerves and joy is the most characteristic of the end of the stage in O Pedrouzo. The advice, and you will see that everyone does the same, is to go to bed early to get up early the next day and start the stage very early. This way you will arrive earlier to Santiago and you will have more time in the city.

At last the last stage of your journey is here. As we said before, the sooner you start walking today the better, because the sooner you will get to Santiago de Compostela.

Once you arrive at Monte do Gozo, you will discover that pleasant sensation when you first see the towers of the cathedral. A perfect panoramic view before savouring your last kilometres and making the triumphal entrance to the Plaza del Obradoiro.

You are in Santiago! Feel happy and proud to have completed your Camino de Santiago. Now we just need to pick up the Compostela certificate and enjoy an incredible day getting to know the Galician capital.

This last day you are in charge, you can go back home or enjoy one more day in Santiago. And how beautiful is Compostela.

Did you know that all roads end in Finisterre? If you have been left with the desire to walk and you have 5 days more, we encourage you to complete the 5 stages from Santiago to Finisterre. The most magical and spiritual route that hides real treasures such as Ponte Maceira, one of the most beautiful villages in Spain or the sunset of the Finisterre lighthouse, one of the most beautiful in the world.
