The Portuguese Way with your dog from Tui in 6 stages is the perfect itinerary if you want to take it easy; something that your dog will appreciate, as a stage of 30 km is usually quite hard for them if they are not used to walking long distances.

This is a trip created with love to avoid the headache of finding pet-friendly accommodation. You will stay in cozy hotels, rural houses, and hostels where you and your dog will have all the necessary comforts to rest after a hard stage. Additionally, we provide luggage transport service between the stages and offer the option for private transfers, eliminating the need for cars and navigating the constraints of public transportation with your furry friend.

Travel Itinerary

Today is the first day of your adventure, in which you will arrive at the beautiful riverside town of Tui. Tui is a border town with Portugal, from which it is only separated by the river Miño. This makes it a town with many green areas in its extensive river promenade. You and your dog will be able to enjoy 100% of a pleasant and quiet walk along the banks of the river Minho. It is also a very busy and multicultural place on the Camino, as pilgrims who come walking from the Portuguese country meet here, with those who, like you, start from here. Perfect for meeting people, listening, sharing experiences and preparing for adventure.

Note: I’m sure you are worried about how to get to Tui with your dog. The best option is to drive to Santiago de Compostela and take a private transfer with your dog to Tui. This way when you finish the Camino you can return home without worries. Contact us!

This is a stage of exuberant colours and vegetation, as several kilometres run through itineraries of the Natura 2000 Network of the Gándaras de Budiño. The walk is pleasant and gentle, so enjoy the surroundings and your first day on the Portuguese Way with your pet.

What better way to end the day than with a pleasant stroll through the historic centre of O Porriño. It is a place totally closed to traffic and people of all ages and nationalities pass through it. It also has numerous shops and cafes located in the surrounding area. The perfect plan to enjoy a relaxing afternoon is to sit on one of the terraces of the town hall square and enjoy some delicious portions with a good Albariño wine.

Today you continue your journey and the reward of the effort will be to take the Ría de Vigo as a companion. Lately in Spain there is a tradition of putting benches with the title “The most beautiful bench in the world” in places with privileged views. Well, there should be a bench at every point that you are going to walk along during the journey. I think we don’t need to tell you more. The best views of the coast of southern Galicia will rise up before you today.

To round off this glorious day, where you’ll arrive ecstatic with so much natural beauty, what better way to finish off than by tucking into some good oysters in Arcade. It is not for nothing that this place is considered the capital of oysters. I assure you that you won’t have tasted anything like it. Of course, don’t forget to accompany your meal with a nice glass of Albariño, the best white wine in the area.

You will leave Arcade behind and start the stage crossing one of the most important bridges in Galicia in terms of history, Ponte Sampaio. It is a colossal stone bridge that spans the river Verdugo and where, during the War of Independence, a battle was fought that led to the withdrawal of French troops in Galicia. After crossing the bridge you will wander among villages, pazos, hórreos and cruceiros until you reach the Brea Vella da Canicouva, an evocative path of large slabs along which the Roman road XIX used to pass.

Pontevedra is for many people one of the most beautiful cities in Galicia, and no wonder. A stroll through its cobbled streets and squares will be enough to realize the special charm it hides. After Santiago de Compostela, Pontevedra is the place on the Portuguese Route from Tui with the largest number of heritage elements. You can visit, among other things, the Ruins of Santo Domingo in the Provincial Museum of Pontevedra, the Royal Basilica of Santa María la Mayor, and the symbol of the city: the church of La Peregrina.

After crossing the river Lérez the Camino leaves Pontevedra and will take you to the Marismas de Alba observatory, a large wetland of 80 hectares that is home to hundreds of plant species and 123 species of birds. The route runs along roads where there are many crossroads and level crossings, so you should take extreme caution. Once you get to Briallos, we recommend you take a detour of half a kilometre to visit the Cascadas del Barosa, a natural site of extraordinary beauty, with a beautiful sixty-metre waterfall and fourteen mills arranged along the waterfalls.

At the end of your stage, Caldas de Reis, the water is still the protagonist as it is one of the most important thermal villages in Galicia, and we present the perfect plan to enjoy a pleasant afternoon: After a short walk through the botanical garden, sit on one of its terraces and enjoy the tranquility listening to the murmur of the river.

After saying goodbye to the thermal village of Caldas, you will enter the valley of Bermaña following the route through its forests of centenary trees, oak groves, cornfields and cruceiros. After a gentle ascent you will reach Santa Mariña de Carracedo, a village with a church, a rectory and a granary. The road continues towards Padrón passing through deep forests with water mills and leaving behind small villages until Pontecesures. After crossing the bridge of Roman origin a few kilometres away you will find the end of the stage, Padrón.

Today’s plan is about literature. On this day we introduce you to Rosalía de Castro, one of the most illustrious Galician women in history. In his House-Museum in Padrón, you will be able to know everything about his life and work. Of course, although the visit is short, your friend will have to wait outside.

Besides, Padrón is a famous town for more reasons. Related to pilgrimages, it is a mythical place because legend has it that it was there that the boat carrying the remains of the apostle St. James landed. You can visit the famous Pedrón that was used to moor the boat in the church of Santiago in the village. And how could it be otherwise, no one can leave without tasting its famous peppers.

Last day of the pilgrim experience! As we always say the ideal is to get up early to make the most of the day in Santiago de Compostela. Today’s stage will pass super fast between nerves and excitement of the imminent arrival. The jewel of this stage is the beautiful collegiate church of Iria Flavia, which was the first cathedral in Galicia and in whose cemetery, under an olive tree, you will find the humble tomb of the famous writer Camilo José Cela. The route continues through the towns of Teo and Ames until you reach the Plaza del Obradoiro. Undoubtedly the most emotional moment of all your French Way from Tui.

You are in Santiago! Feel happy and proud to have completed your Portuguese Way in the company of your inseparable four-legged friend. Now you just need to pick up your Compostela certificate and the canine Compostela to enjoy an incredible day getting to know the Galician capital.

Additionally, you have the option to tailor your trip by including the following optional services:

You WIL NOT be able to include:

  • Breakfast or half-board options. Dining areas are shared with other pilgrims who may not be comfortable with dogs or could have allergies. However, you can inquire about this option at each accommodation and arrange it directly with them. Additionally, we'll provide you with a guide featuring advice, including places where you can have breakfast, lunch, or dinner with your pet.

Unlike group tours, there won't be a bus service, guide, or support vehicle provided between stages. However, you'll have access to a 24-hour hotline where you can reach us in case of any issues or unexpected events.

Typically, each booking includes accommodation for one dog. If you plan to travel with additional pets under the same reservation, please let us in advance.

Yes, you will have total freedom to choose your departure date. However, if you want to do your Camino de Santiago in the months of December, January and February, we recommend that you check availability before making your reservation. At this time of year most accommodation is closed and many services may not be available.

In your travel documents, you will find the names of the accommodations assigned to you, as well as their contact telephone number and location.   As a general rule, all accommodation are located in the centre of the different towns along the Pilgrims' Route to Santiago de Compostela, without the need to deviate too far from the route. But sometimes, due to lack of availability, it is possible that some accommodation may be a little far from the village or even in neighbouring towns.   For all the accommodations that are at a considerable distance from the route of the Camino, we will provide you with a free taxi service that you can use to get to your accommodation and return to the Camino the next morning.   In any case, these are exceptions that we will inform you at the time of booking.

Luggage transport service by default is included in all our trips and it is not necessary to request it. You can enjoy the Camino de Santiago without the burden of carrying your luggage on your back, knowing that your suitcase will be waiting for you at your next accommodation upon your arrival.   Along with your credential, you'll also receive stickers. Cover these stickers with the requested information and stick them in a visible place on your suitcase.   Upon arrival at your accommodation, we suggest asking at the reception where you can leave your luggage. You'll need to leave your luggage at the designated spot early in the morning for our carrier to pick it up. This ensures that when you arrive at your next accommodation, your luggage will already be waiting for you.

With your booking, you'll have an additional suitcase allocated specifically for transporting all your pet's essentials, including food, toys, bedding, blankets, water bowl, and more. This means you can set off on the Camino de Santiago without worrying about lugging around heavy bags. We'll take care of transferring your stuff from one place to the next every day. So, when you finish a stage, your things will be waiting for you at the next spot.

We have a taxi service that you can hire whenever you need it. You can hire it, for example, to go from the airport to the start of your Camino, or to go from Santiago to your starting point to pick up your car once you finish the stage.   The price of the transfers will depend on the distance from your point of origin to the destination. If you have any questions about this service do not hesitate to contact us.

We provide mandatory insurance coverage with every trip to safeguard you against any potential inconveniences during the Camino de Santiago. You'll receive the insurance policy along with your travel documents.

The Canine Credential, issued by the Asociación Protectora de Animales del Camino de Santiago (APACA), is like a passport for pets. It works similarly to the Pilgrim's Credential for humans. During your journey, you'll need to stamp it at least twice a day at places like hostels, restaurants, and churches until you reach Santiago de Compostela. Once you have finished your Camino de Santiago, contact APACA to get the Compostela Canina, which certifies your pet's journey.

Carrying the veterinary card or canine passport is mandatory. Additionally, it's recommended to attach a tag with your name and phone number to your pet's collar.
Before embarking on your journey, ensure your dog has received a minimum of two doses of the following vaccinations: trivalent parvovirus (distemper, hepatitis, and leptospirosis), as well as the rabies vaccination administered at least 20 days prior. Regarding leishmaniasis, it is a disease prevalent in Galicia, so it is strongly advised that the dog is protected either through vaccination or by using a reliable collar.
