PORTUGUESE WAY: SPIRITUAL VARIATION (118 Kms)

In this section we present the possibility of carrying out the Portuguese Way through the spiritual variant. This modality consists of adding a detour along the coast, from Pontevedra to Padrón, to make the route of the Traslatio, known as the origin of all roads. From the estuary of Arousa, you will ascend upstream by the river Ulla, until you reach Pontecesures and Padrón, carrying out the same route that took the Apostle Santiago in his stone boat to earth.

*You can do any of the modalities that we offer of the Portuguese Way and add this spiritual variant from Pontevedra

Arrival in Pontevedra

Welcome to Pontevedra, an emblematic and historical city. Pontevedra is for many one of the most beautiful cities of Galicia, and it is not for less. A walk through its cobbled streets and squares will be enough to realize the special charm that it hides. After Santiago de Compostela, Pontevedra is the place on this route with the most heritage elements. You will be able to visit, among other things, the Ruins of Santo Domingo in the Provincial Museum of Pontevedra, the Royal Basilica of Santa María la Mayor, and the symbol of the city: the Pilgrim’s Church. It is for all this that it becomes a perfect beginning for the spiritual variant of the Portuguese Way.

Pontevedra – A Armenteira

Dificultad LowTiempo estimado 4-5hDistancia22,7 Km

From Pontevedra, the route of the spiritual variant begins. You will walk from the city centre to Combarro along a beautiful route that borders the coast. You will leave Pontevedra by the bridge that joins the city with Poio and from there, you will walk towards the coast until you reach the Lourido cove. From here, the route runs along the Avenida Praia until you reach the beach of Campelo, where you can continue the itinerary along a path that borders the coast until you reach A Seara. From A Seara you will arrive at the centre of Combarro along an asphalted road where the views of the sea will still be the protagonists.

From Combarro you will ascend by the Camino Vilar to the Mirador do Loureiro, from which you will continue climbing to the Monastery of Santa Maria de Armenteira, the end of the stage.

Combarro is a small fishing village in the municipality of Poio. This village has one of the most emblematic historical centres of Galicia, full of cruceiros and hórreos. Without a doubt, you will enjoy getting lost among its streets from the Plaza de Chousa, visiting the more than 60 hórreos that this place has and tasting dishes of the wonderful local gastronomy.

A Armenteira – Vilanova de Arousa

Dificultad MediumTiempo estimado 5h 30′Distancia22,7 Km

From the monastery begins the beautiful route of the pedra e da auga, which runs parallel to the Armenteira stream. Walking through this place of great natural beauty, you will cross the municipalities of Meis and Ribadumia until you reach Pontearnelas. The path of a pedra e auga, stands out for its lush Later, after a succession of rural spots and vineyards, you will approach the Ría de Arousa, reaching the end of your stage in Vilanova de Arousa.

Vilanova de Arousa is the birthplace of Valle-Inclán. You will be able to enjoy this small marine town, through its numerous beaches, wines and rich gastronomy. The most important monuments are the manor house of Valle-Inclán, the church of Santa María de Caleiro, the pazo of Rúa Nova or the towers of Cálogo.

Vilanova de Arousa – Padrón

Dificultad MediumTiempo estimado 5hDistancia27,7 Km

On this day, you will head to Vilagarcía de Arousa, alternating between roads and coastal paths. From there you will start the famous and mythical route of the Traslatio. The path runs alongside the river Ulla, upstream. Without a doubt, the most impressive point along the route will be Catoira with its imposing towers. Once we arrive in Pontecesures, after crossing the bridge towards Padrón, the spiritual variant of the Way will be over. From here, you can continue to Santiago de Compostela along the conventional route of the Portuguese Way.
Padrón is famous, among other things, for its peppers and for having been the place where the boat of the Apostle Santiago made landfall. For this last reason, it will be obligatory to visit the famous Pedrón in the church of Santiago, which according to legend was used to moor the boat of the Apostle, in order to completely complete the spiritual variant. We also recommend visiting the Rosalía de Castro Museum and the Iria Flavia collegiate church, on the way out of the village towards Santiago de Compostela.

In Padrón you can obtain the “la Pedronía” certificate, which certifies that you have reached the end of the spiritual path.

Padrón – Santiago de Compostela

Dificultad LowTiempo estimado 6h 30′Distancia24,5 Km

Last stage of the Portuguese Way, so we recommend leaving early to take advantage of the day in Compostela. Today you will find a high density of urbanized areas, which confirm that you are reaching the goal. The most outstanding of this stage, besides the Cathedral of Santiago, is the beautiful collegiate church of Iria Flavia, considered the first cathedral of Galicia in its beginnings and currently holds the title of second cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. In its cemetery, under an olive tree, you will find the humble tomb of Camilo José Cela. The path continues through the municipalities of Teo and Ames until the entrance to Santiago de Compostela through the southern part of the city and the arrival at the long awaited Plaza del Obradoiro.

You are in Santiago de Compostela, the city where the rain makes magic on the wet stones. After having stamped your credential in each stage and having collected your Compostela, after all the effort it is time to enjoy the city, you will have earned it to pulse.we hope that you enjoy strolling through the historical center, enjoying a fresh beer accompanied by a delicious tapa, dancing and singing in a foliada, or trying some of its traditional liquors, among a thousand and one things that this small but great city offers.
