Types of backpacks

The choice of the type of backpack is a real headache because there are countless types of them. Many pilgrims do not choose correctly and this is a mistake that is usually made. We must remember that the type of backpack is important, we will carry it with us throughout the day traveling long distances. To choose the best backpack for the Camino de Santiago we have to take into account different factors such as capacity, characteristics, adaptation to our body, weight, etc.

Backpack size and capacity

When it comes to backpacks for the Camino de Santiago, size and capacity are fundamental aspects. A backpack that is too small will not allow you to carry everything you need, while one that is too large can be uncomfortable and heavy.

Two different types of backpacks

For most pilgrims, a backpack with a capacity of 30 to 40 liters is usually sufficient. This will allow you to carry the essentials, such as clothing, toiletries, sleeping bag, first aid kit and some food. Remember that it is important to keep your backpack as light as possible to avoid injuries and fully enjoy the Camino.

Remember that smaller capacity backpacks can be useful in summer, but in winter we recommend opting for a larger capacity option, as cold weather clothing takes up considerably more space than summer clothing, and this may require a larger backpack.

In addition to the capacity of the backpack, it is generally recommended that its contents weigh no more than 10% of the body weight.

That is, if a person weighs 70kg, the ideal would be that the maximum weight of the backpack is 7 kg. Although only that 10% is a reference, if it were below it would be much better. The less we carry the better, only the essential.

Features

We have talked about the capacity as well as the size but they are not the only factors to take into account in our choice. Once we have decided on the capacity and found our size, we must look at certain characteristics that will help us along the way.

Durability and water resistance

During the Camino de Santiago, you will be exposed to different weather conditions and varied terrain. Therefore, it is essential that your backpack is durable and water resistant to protect your belongings.

Opt for a backpack made of the best durable materials, such as high-quality nylon or polyester. Also, look for a backpack with a waterproof cover or water-repellent features to keep your belongings dry in case of rain.

Distribution and accessibility

The layout and accessibility of your backpack’s compartments are also important aspects to consider. Look for a backpack with multiple pockets and compartments to organize your belongings effectively.

It is recommended that your backpack has an easily accessible main compartment, where you can place the items you need most often. It is also useful to have side or front pockets to carry water bottles, snacks or items you need to have on hand during the road.

Fit and Comfort

The backpack will accompany you throughout the Camino, and since you share the trip, what less than doing it with one that fits you well. The height should be adjustable, even though you have chosen the right size, you may need to adjust it to your back to be able to walk more comfortably.

A lumbar reinforcement and adjustable straps to both chest and waist will be an essential feature, this will suit the body and avoid possible discomfort in the back and neck. And having shoulder pads will help to cushion the weight of each step we take, avoiding discomfort and injury.
