Just as if we do the Way of St. James on foot, the Bicycle Way will make us wonder what to carry in our luggage. Obviously there will be things between these two modalities that coincide but we will have to take another type of luggage. In the same way the luggage will depend to a great extent on whether we opt for the transport of luggage either contracted or included in a trip that we organize.

Several factors must be taken into account when preparing the luggage that we will carry during the route. Factors such as the type of bike, the Road chosen, the time in which we travel, among others, but these are the most important.

We will start by remembering that the luggage will sometimes coincide both in pilgrims on foot and on bicycles. For this reason you may be interested in reading What took me to the Way of St. James? Here’s what to bring if you’ve decided to ride your bike and pedal along the Camino de Santiago.

The first thing we have to take into account and we risk to say that is the most important thing, is to know the type of bike we will carry. It is important because it is our way to get to Santiago and the transport in which we will take our luggage.

In addition to what is necessary during the journey such as the toiletry bag, a first-aid kit, documentation, among other things, in the backpack of the bicycle will change both clothes and accessories with respect to the pilgrim on foot. We will deal with all the material of the Way in bicycle either clothing, accessories or accessories for this modality.

Clothing for cyclists

Breathable T-shirts: it is recommended to wear two or three depending on the duration of the chosen path. Preferably short-sleeved if the weather is good. In the case of wearing some long sleeves will help us if it rains because it will prevent the raincoat sticking to our skin.

Jersey: we can alternate with breathable shirts and can be either short or long. Everything will depend on the weather and how we endure cold or heat.

Bib shorts: it is highly recommended to wear at least a pair of shorts and it is better that they are short.

Tights: we recommend wearing a pair of tights to wear over the shorts if it rains during the tour so that the rain trousers do not stick to the skin if we wear them.

Windstopper jacket: It is essential to always have a windbreaker in our luggage.

Boots: Experienced cyclists recommend wearing neoprene boots that are five or six sizes larger than your shoes to cover your shoes and make sure you get to the finish line with dry feet.

Rain pants and raincoat: Another popular option is to wear a raincoat, although it is not recommended. May reduce mobility when riding a bicycle.

Waterproof boot covers: As we all know, there is no more unpleasant feeling than having wet feet, and more for a long period of time, so we consider this element indispensable.

Cycling shoes: the ideal shoe for cycling, one with cleats to be attached to the pedals. It is also very advisable to get one that also has the sole adapted to be able to walk. At times we may need to get off the bike to continue on foot.

Rest footwear: we can opt for normal sports shoes, to rest our feet after each stage if we want to discover the locality in which we are. We will also avoid the appearance of blisters or certain discomforts. We recommend that you also have a shoot done.

Sandals: Recommended both for the shower and for our feet to breathe.

Helmet: Essential complement for our security, totally obligatory in the bicycle.

Gloves: Gloves for bicycles, winter gloves if the temperature is low and summer gloves if the temperature is low. They’re very useful.

Cap / hat: Although we take the helmet in the bicycle we advise for the stops or the sections to foot to take it to protect us from the sun.

Eyeglasses: Eyeglasses will help protect us from the sun as well as mosquitoes, dust, etc.

Pass mountains or handkerchief around your neck: During each stage and more on the descents, it will help protect us from the cold.

Bicycle accessories

Hydration backpacks: we can choose between these backpacks or jerry cans, but this option speeds up the action of hydration during the stage.

Saddlebags: we recommend that you carry your luggage with you, especially your backpacks, so that you can carry your luggage on the road. If you choose to hire the Camino and for example we organize it for you, you will only need to carry a backpack with something to replenish your strength and water. We will take the luggage from stage to stage. However for those who do it on their own it will be necessary and obligatory. A front may be added if the luggage is large.

Elastic octopus: In case we need to attach an object to our carrier. Some examples for which it would be useful are to carry a mat or tent.

Front and rear light: We should be visible during the road especially in the hours of low visibility. We must remember that the path is made by many bicycles and pilgrims on foot.

Padlock: to be able to leave the bicycle and be carefree.

Speedometer and pulsmeter: optional, but if you’re a true fan of cycling and sport, you won’t have to be told twice.

Water bottle: Although we carry the hydration backpack is not too much to carry a bottle, some stages are quite long or hard

Multi-tool kit: if we have any improvised we must be prepared so a kit to fix the bike is essential. In it we will take: spare chambers (two is recommended), patches for punctures, lubricant, oil and brush for the chain and some multipurpose tool with allen keys and others necessary for the mechanics of the bicycle.
